{"id":8617,"date":"2025-10-13T10:46:07","date_gmt":"2025-10-13T14:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/genetics\/?p=8617"},"modified":"2025-10-17T10:46:51","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T14:46:51","slug":"genes-implicated-in-alzheimers-studies-in-african-americans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/genetics\/2025\/10\/13\/genes-implicated-in-alzheimers-studies-in-african-americans\/","title":{"rendered":"Genes implicated in Alzheimer&#8217;s studies in African Americans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The largest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.progress.org.uk\/glossary\/gene-expression\/\" class=\"link-tooltip--link\">gene-expression<\/a> study in African Americans with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease reveals overexpression of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.progress.org.uk\/glossary\/gene\/\" class=\"link-tooltip--link\">gene<\/a>\u00a0also implicated in those with white European ancestry.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, Massachusetts, looked at<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.progress.org.uk\/glossary\/rna-ribonucleic-acid\/\" class=\"link-tooltip--link\">RNA<\/a> sequencing data from post-mortem brain tissue from 207 donors: 125 confirmed Alzheimer&#8217;s disease cases and 82 controls.<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>ADAMTS2<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>was the gene with the most significant gene expression differences between cases and controls, being 1.5 times more expressed in the brain of patients with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease.<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>ADAMTS2<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>is a gene involved in the production of collagen, which helps provide structure to many body tissues. This gene has also ranked among the top genes with highest expression differences in patients with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, in a European ancestry population, according to a<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/alz.70629\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previous study<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>from the same group.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;The fact that expression of<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>ADAMTS2<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>is significantly and substantially higher in brain tissue from both [white and black people] with Alzheimer&#8217;s disease not only points to a shared biological process leading to Alzheimer&#8217;s disease, but also elevates the priority of further research involving this gene which could determine its suitability as a potential therapeutic target,&#8217; said<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sph\/profile\/lindsay-farrer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Professor Lindsay Farrer<\/a>, chief of biomedical genetics at the Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, and senior author of the study published in the journal<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/alz.70629\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alzheimer&#8217;s and Dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, a total of 482 of the 33,611 genes studied were differentially expressed in cases when compared to controls, in the African American population. Out of these, 174 had higher and 308 had lower expression in Alzheimer&#8217;s disease cases than controls. The study showed that 65 of these genes were differentially expressed in the same direction in both the African American population and the European ancestry population.
