Our primary objectives include:<\/p>\n<ul data-sourcepos=\"5:1-8:0\">\n<li data-sourcepos=\"5:1-5:165\"><strong>Comprehensive Neuropathological Evaluation:<\/strong> Conducting in-depth examinations of brain tissue from donors with and without dementia or Alzheimer&#8217;s disease (AD).<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"6:1-6:112\"><strong>Digital Pathology Library:<\/strong> Creating a digital repository of pathology slides for easy access and analysis.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"7:1-8:0\"><strong>Novel Method Development:<\/strong> Developing innovative techniques for qualitative and quantitative histopathological characterization of brain tissue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"9:1-9:21\"><strong>Key Achievements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-sourcepos=\"11:1-19:0\">\n<li data-sourcepos=\"11:1-11:93\"><strong>Tissue Acquisition:<\/strong> Received 8 new cases over the past year, bringing the total to 288.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"12:1-12:182\"><strong>Data Management:<\/strong> Entered neuropathological data into REDCap, a database compatible with the National Alzheimer&#8217;s Coordinating Center (NACC), and generated reports for families.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"13:1-13:83\"><strong>Automation:<\/strong> Developed an automated report generation system from REDCap data.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"14:1-14:123\"><strong>Tissue Distribution:<\/strong> Implemented a rigorous tissue request review process and distributed samples to 2 investigators.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"15:1-15:101\"><strong>Research Output:<\/strong> Supported 8 original peer-reviewed publications and 7 currently funded grants.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"16:1-16:137\"><strong>Quantitative Analysis:<\/strong> Conducted detailed staining analyses and developed AI tools for analyzing pathologic density and cell types.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"17:1-17:121\"><strong>Machine Learning:<\/strong> Utilized quantitative protein densities for machine learning-driven disease progression modeling.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"18:1-19:0\"><strong>SuStaIn:<\/strong> Developed a machine learning toolset to model neuropathology progression through the brain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"20:1-20:17\"><strong>Future Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-sourcepos=\"22:1-26:0\">\n<li data-sourcepos=\"22:1-22:162\"><strong>Tissue Distribution:<\/strong> Streamlining tissue distribution processes and communication with the Brain Tissue Repository Oversight Committee (BROC) and Data Team.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"23:1-23:83\"><strong>Legacy Case Analysis:<\/strong> Completing TDP-43 and Thal assessments on legacy cases.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"24:1-24:56\"><strong>Digitalization:<\/strong> Completing digital slide scanning.<\/li>\n<li data-sourcepos=\"25:1-26:0\"><strong>Vascular Pathology Assessment:<\/strong> Expanding assessments of vascular pathologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"27:1-27:192\">By combining state-of-the-art techniques with a comprehensive tissue repository, the Neuropathology Core is making significant contributions to the field of neurodegenerative disease research.<\/p>\n<p data-sourcepos=\"27:1-27:192\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/fhs-bap\/files\/2024\/11\/brain-636x478.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"231\" class=\" wp-image-3168 aligncenter\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/fhs-bap\/files\/2024\/11\/brain-636x478.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/fhs-bap\/files\/2024\/11\/brain.jpg 767w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Neuropathology Core Advances Brain Disease Research with Innovative Methods and Comprehensive Tissue Repository Core Leaders: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The Neuropathology Core is dedicated to advancing our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases.
