The Department of Medicine is conducting a coaching pilot program. Coaching is designed to assist individuals to self-reflect, gain perspective, and establish accountability facilitating the achievement of personal and professional goals. The topics of coaching will be confidential and will be directed by the coachee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

Coaching Pilot Format<\/h5>
<\/p>\n

The first session will establish the purpose of coaching and the coach\/coachee \u201cfit\u201d. If a referral for another type of program\/support is sought, she will assist the individual in finding other resources\/persons (e.g., other potential programs such as Faculty & Staff Assistance<\/a>, Therapist, Ombuds<\/a>, Mentors<\/a>, Faculty Development Programs<\/a>, etc.).<\/p>\n

Please note that only faculty with a primary academic appointment in (DOM) are eligible for the Coaching Program.<\/p>\n

Deborah Whalen's Background<\/h5>
<\/p>\n

Debbie uses the evidenced-based coaching practices taught at Co<\/strong>lumbia University Coaching Certification Program.<\/strong> As a coach, she draws upon adult transformational learning and cognitive behavioral sciences\u00a0to actively empower clients to draw upon their own resourcefulness and strengths to achieve their dreams. Her goal in coaching conversations is to create for the coachee the space for meaningful exploration, reflection and growth.<\/p>\n

About Deborah Whalen<\/h5>
<\/p>\n

Deborah Whalen is the Director for Quality and Patient Safety in the Department of Medicine and Assistant Professor of Medicine Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine. Her background blends an Advanced Practice Degree in Nursing as well as an MBA which she obtained as a Commonwealth Fund Nurse Executive Fellow. Deborah has lectured nationally and internationally in the fields of Cardiovascular Nursing and Quality Improvement . She was the Project Lead in Boston Medical Center\u2019s Cardiac Monitoring Alarm Initiative recognized nationally and internationally as a model for significantly reducing alarm fatigue and has received numerous quality awards for her work including those awarded by the American Heart Association and America’s Essential Hospitals. Her most recent work is heavily focused on reducing heart failure readmissions. She is currently enrolled in Columbia University Coaching Certification Program .<\/p>\n
