{"id":1073,"date":"2017-08-08T10:00:18","date_gmt":"2017-08-08T14:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/endo\/?page_id=1073"},"modified":"2018-07-19T09:13:19","modified_gmt":"2018-07-19T13:13:19","slug":"clinical-research-basics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/endo\/research\/clinical-research-basics\/","title":{"rendered":"The Basics of Clinical Research for Participants"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #008080;\">What<\/span><\/em>\u00a0is research?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Research<\/strong><\/em> is a process to discover new knowledge or test what we predict might be true (a hypothesis).<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Clinical research<\/strong><\/em> is the study of health and illness in people.<sup>2<\/sup> It looks at new ways to prevent, detect, treat, or understand disease.<sup>3<\/sup> It may test new drugs or combination of drugs; new surgical procedures or devices; or new ways to use existing treatments.<sup>3<\/sup> You can learn about basics of clinical research on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/health-information\/nih-clinical-research-trials-you\/basics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NIH\u2019s website<\/a>. If you are interested in learning about the different types of clinical research, please visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/ForPatients\/ClinicalTrials\/Types\/ucm20041762.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FDA\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #008080;\">Who\u00a0<\/span><\/em>participates in research?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Anyone can participate in research. You may be a healthy volunteer or an individual with specific health conditions. Additionally, individuals with and without health insurance are able to volunteer. For all studies, an individual must meet certain eligibility criteria.<\/p>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #008080;\" mce-data-marked=\"1\">Why\u00a0<\/span><\/em>should I volunteer?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>To help others by allowing science to move forward<sup>3<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>To possibly receive the newest treatment<sup>3<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>To have the additional care and attention from the clinical trial staff<sup>3<\/sup><\/li>\n<li>To learn more about your health or specific health condition<sup>3<\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>How<\/em><\/span> do I know the research I\u2019m participating in is safe?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">In most cases, new therapies or procedures are first tested in the laboratory or in animal studies.\u00a0All studies must be approved by an Institutional Review Board, which protects the rights and welfare of human research subjects. Additionally, government agencies ensure all research is conducted with patient safety in mind. These agencies include the Office of Human Research Protections and the Food and Drug Administration.<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>How<\/em> <\/span>does clinical research differ from my usual medical care?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><strong>Medical care<\/strong><\/em> is specifically based on you. Your doctor will develop a plan of care specifically to you and your medical history. The goal of care is to help you directly.<sup>2<br \/>\n<\/sup>In <em><strong>clinical research<\/strong><\/em>, you and the researcher must follow a set plan, called a protocol. Additionally, you may or may not benefit directly from being in a clinical research study.<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><em>Where<\/em> <\/span>can I find a research study that&#8217;s right for me?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you are interested in a study in our Clinical Trials Unit, please consider enrolling in our registry.
