General Information

The Combined Boston University-VA Endocrinology, Diabetes and Nutrition fellowship is an ACGME-accredited fellowship program located at Boston Medical Center and the VA Boston Healthcare System. Clinical time is spent at both hospitals, and research may be conducted at either institution.  The program includes the ACGME required 2 year experience in clinical endocrinology.

Upon completing the 2-year experience, fellows may become eligible to sit for the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine) endocrinology board certification exam.

A 3rd year of fellowship is encouraged for fellows pursuing research projects leading toward academic medical careers. The program maintains an NIH training grant to support fellows during the 3rd year. BUMC also maintains a separate 1-year nutrition fellowship and the VA maintains research fellowships as alternative 3rd year tracks.

1. Satisfactory completion of an ACGME-accredited 3-year internal medicine residency program.
2. Satisfactory completion of the United States Medical Licensing Examination Parts I, II, and III.

Boston Medical Center is a licensed 600 bed hospital located in Boston’s historic South End. BMC is the major teaching hospital of the Boston University School of Medicine with which it shares the Boston University Medical Campus. Emphasizing community-based and tertiary care as the largest safety-net hospital in the region, the hospital’s mission is to provide consistently excellent and accessible health services to all.

Boston Medical Center provides a full spectrum of endocrinology and nutrition services through its General Endocrinology, Diabetes, Thyroid, Bone Health, Androgen, Transgender, Nutrition and Weight Management, Reproductive Endocrinology, Diabetes in Pregnancy, Pituitary, and Pediatric Endocrinology Clinics. The large faculty perform thyroid fine needle aspiration biopsies, diagnostic thyroid ultrasounds, bone density evaluations, and radioactive iodine treatments.

An important part of the fellowship is participation in meaningful endocrinology research. Internationally known faculty members provide opportunities for both basic and clinical research. For more information on research opportunities, please visit the endocrine research website.
