{"id":4608,"date":"2014-03-11T12:38:55","date_gmt":"2014-03-11T16:38:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/derm\/?page_id=4608"},"modified":"2023-09-11T17:52:56","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T21:52:56","slug":"curriculum-and-evaluation","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/derm\/training-programs-overview\/medical-students\/derm-elective\/curriculum-and-evaluation\/","title":{"rendered":"Curriculum and Evaluation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Default\">The <strong>curriculum<\/strong> includes reading assignment and brief\u00a0presentation\u00a0(see below), patient encounters in the outpatient and inpatient setting, bedside teaching by dermatology attendings, resident teaching, lectures\/conferences and grand rounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Reading assignment<\/span>: It is required that you go through the American Academy of Dermatology Medical student core curriculum modules and the Dermatology procedure safety module.\u00a0 These can be found on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aad.org\/education-and-quality-care\/medical-student-core-curriculum\">http:\/\/www.aad.org\/education-and-quality-care\/medical-student-core-curriculum.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Each AAD medical student module is composed of a power point presentation and a self-assessment at the end.\u00a0 Typically, each module takes &lt; 30 minutes to complete.\u00a0 There are also videos on the website for the various dermatologic procedures. The link offers a suggested module order. This can be done during \u201cdown time\u201d in clinic or at home.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Presentation<\/span>: Each student is required to give a five minute PowerPoint presentation at the end of their\u00a0elective on a topic of their choice (typically based on a patient they have seen during their rotation).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Default\">Other educational resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Department of Dermatology Library (textbooks, atlases, journal collection)<\/li>\n<li>Marks JG, Miller JJ.\u00a0 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Lookingbill and Marks\u2019 Principles of Dermatology<\/span>. 4<sup>th<\/sup> ed.\u00a0 W.B. This website provides an interactive look at primary morphology of the skin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<p>Students will be <strong>evaluated<\/strong> based on direct observation by faculty and residents for clinical performance (50%) and professionalism (20%) as well as the end of rotation quiz and oral presentation (30%).\u00a0 Grades of Honors, High Pass, Pass, Fail and Incomplete will be used.\u00a0 In general, a grade of Honors will be given to students who demonstrate a keen interest and superior knowledge in the subject matter and become highly involved in patient care.
