{"id":93,"date":"2008-09-05T14:56:21","date_gmt":"2008-09-05T18:56:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/citylab\/?page_id=93"},"modified":"2023-04-28T15:14:50","modified_gmt":"2023-04-28T19:14:50","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/citylab\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"CityLab at Boston University"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><\/h3>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">In 1991, Boston University Schools of Medicine (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/\">BUSM<\/a>) and Education (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/\">WED<\/a>) pioneered an innovative, science education outreach program that has been disseminated across the country. CityLab is a biotechnology learning laboratory at BUSM serving students and teachers in grades 7-12.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"> CityLab&#8217;s mission is to provide access to state-of-the-art biotechnology laboratory facilities and curriculum, unavailable to most school systems. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Teachers from across <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Massachusetts<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"> and neighboring states bring their students to CityLab where they solve problems by applying the same techniques and concepts of genetics and molecular biology used in research laboratories today. In 1998, BUSM expanded CityLab&#8217;s pre-college biotechnology education with the inception of the <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>MobileLab<\/strong><\/span>. The MobileLab is a forty-foot, fully equipped traveling laboratory that can accommodate multiple classes per day to better serve the needs of classroom teachers.<span> <\/span>In addition, the MobileLab serves a variety of groups such as after-school programs, industry, community groups, professional conferences as well as middle schools and high schools. A significant benefit of the mobile laboratory concept is the equal opportunity it provides to diverse, often underserved, student populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">From 1992 until 2019 (pre-COVID), <strong>more than 120,000 students <\/strong>participated in hands-on, discovery-oriented investigations and <strong>more than 2000 teachers <\/strong>attended workshops at CityLab or aboard the MobileLab.<span> <\/span>Approximately 30% of students identify as members of underrepresented groups, and 54% of participating students are female.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Curriculum Supplements<\/h2>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">The core curriculum supplements are aligned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doe.mass.edu\/frameworks\/scitech\/2016-04.pdf\">Massachusetts Science and Technology\/Engineering<\/a> curriculum frameworks and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextgenscience.org\/\">Next Generation Science Standards<\/a> (NGSS).
