{"id":84195,"date":"2020-05-12T11:25:59","date_gmt":"2020-05-12T15:25:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/?p=84195"},"modified":"2020-05-12T12:48:09","modified_gmt":"2020-05-12T16:48:09","slug":"specially-designed-footwear-reduces-pain-of-knee-osteoarthritis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/2020\/05\/12\/specially-designed-footwear-reduces-pain-of-knee-osteoarthritis\/","title":{"rendered":"Specially Designed Footwear Reduces Pain of Knee Osteoarthritis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wearing shoes <em>specifically<\/em> <span>designed with a novel sole<\/span> (biomechanical footwear) significantly reduces the pain associated with knee osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n<p><span>Knee osteoarthritis affects approximately 275 million people worldwide and in 2017 was estimated to account for 8.3 million years lived with disability. Acetaminophen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids are most commonly used drugs to treat pain but have limited effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Researchers from BUSM, the University of Toronto and the University of Bern Switzerland studied 220 participants who suffered with painful osteoarthritis. Half wore the biomechanical footwear while the others wore the \u201ccontrol\u201d shoes. After six months of wearing the shoes, the biomechanical group had a larger decrease in their pain score measured by the Western Ontario Osteoarthritis Index pain scale. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/camed\/files\/2019\/10\/David-Felson-1-e1589297113299.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-75845\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/>\u201cThese findings provide strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of a new treatment for knee osteoarthritis,\u201d said David Felson, MD, MPH, professor of medicine and coauthor of the study. Dr. Felson, a rheumatologist at Boston Medical Center, believes the treatment probably works by re-educating and reconditioning muscles in the legs. \u201cThis treatment may help many persons with this disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>According to the researchers, <\/span>not only does it appear to reduce pain in people with osteoarthritis, but may also be effective for some people with hip or back pain.<\/p>\n<p><span>The authors caution that further research is needed to assess long-term efficacy and safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These findings appear <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/searchresults?q=Effect%20of%20biomechanical%20footwear&amp;allSites=1&amp;SearchSourceType=1&amp;exPrm_qqq={!payloadDisMaxQParser%20pf=Tags%20qf=Tags^0.0000001%20payloadFields=Tags%20bf=}%22Effect%20of%20biomechanical%20footwear%22&amp;exPrm_hl.q=Effect%20of%20biomechanical%20footwear\">online in <em>JAMA<\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The trial was sponsored by Bern University Hospital and coordinated by CTU Bern, the University of Bern\u2019s clinical trials unit. The trial was funded by Maxi Foundation, the Canada Research Chairs Programme.
