{"id":6805,"date":"2013-04-19T14:27:36","date_gmt":"2013-04-19T18:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/?p=3722"},"modified":"2013-04-19T14:27:36","modified_gmt":"2013-04-19T18:27:36","slug":"busm-chapter-wins-ama-service-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/2013\/04\/19\/busm-chapter-wins-ama-service-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"BUSM Chapter Wins AMA Service Grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boston University medical students were recently awarded a Section Involvement Grant (SIG) from the American Medical Association (AMA) in support of \u201cMiles for Healthier Lifestyles 2013,\u201d which will take place on Saturday, April 27.<\/p>\n<p>The $250 award is designed to put AMA policies into action by providing students with an opportunity to get more involved in public service in their medical school campuses and communities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3723\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3723\" style=\"width: 192px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/camed\/files\/2013\/04\/verter.jpg\" alt=\"Erol Eri Verter\" title=\"verter\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3723\" height=\"286\" width=\"182\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erol Eri Verter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Initially organized in 2009 by New England-area medical students including those from BUSM, the fifth-annual \u201cMiles for Healthier Lifestyles has featured an month-long  intramural and intercollegiate competition among participating medical schools, and will culminate in a health fair at the Wang YMCA in Chinatown on April 27, where students will assist with health screenings and dietary counseling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole idea is to encourage people to be more [physically] active,\u201d said Erol Eri Verter, BUSM \u201816, who authored the grant.<\/p>\n<p>BUSM\u2019s AMA-Medical Student Section chapter is still looking for student and physician volunteers for its April 27 health fair.
