How About Stethoscopes!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PYErVjvhn38\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\nThis year Halloween was filled with treats for the entire class of first year medical students. \u00a0On Tuesday, Oct. 31,\u00a0173\u00a0students each received a stethoscope\u00a0as a gift\u00a0from\u00a0a BUSM\u00a0alum.<\/p>\n<p>For a decade\u00a0alumni\u00a0have\u00a0participated in the Stethoscopes for Students program, coordinated by the BUSM Alumni Association. \u00a0Along with the stethoscope\u00a0each student also receives\u00a0a blood pressure cuff, ophthalmoscope, otoscope, reflex hammer, tuning forks, and a hospital gown\u00a0so that students can\u00a0practice exams on each other.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, each member of the class received renowned surgeon Atul Gawande\u2019s most recent book addressing patient mortality, \u201cBeing Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End,\u201d which was graciously donated by four faculty and alumni. Pediatric neurologist Elizabeth Dooling, MD, BUSM \u201965, who has donated the book to students for three years now, was joined this year by Assistant Dean for Student Affairs Arvin Garg, MD, MPH, BUSM \u201999 SPH \u201999, Associate Professor of Otolaryngology Anand K. Devaiah, MD, and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology Manju L. Subramanian, MD.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my work I find these issues can come up with children with disabilities or\u00a0terminal illnesses. \u00a0As people enter middle age they are taking care of their own children and sometimes their parents, and as they continue to age they may experience some diminishment of their own physical and\u00a0cognitive\u00a0abilities\u201d said Dooling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you\u2019re a student in surgery or\u00a0psychiatry or any other\u00a0area of medicine, as a healthcare provider the issues in this book are going to have an impact on you and with your family and\u00a0I think they are very thoughtfully addressed in this book,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Jack\u00a0Killion, BUSM \u201921 said, \u201cI want to give a big thank you to all of the BUSM alumni who generously donated stethoscopes to our class. \u00a0Medical school\u00a0is very expensive and we greatly appreciate these gifts.
