Photo by Jackie Ricciardi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Darrell Kotton, Gustavo Mostoslavsky, and George Murphy began the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dbin\/stemcells\/\">Center for Regenerative Medicine<\/a> (CReM) in 2008 with a mission. It was not to win a Nobel Prize, launch more spin-offs than their peers, or make megabucks and retire at 35. Rather, their mantra was both humbler and grander: \u201cdecrease the burden of human suffering on the planet, help patients, and advance new knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the lab has made a name for itself not only through its top-notch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/articles\/crem-scientists-turn-ips-cells-into-lung-cells\/\">research on stem cells and lung disease<\/a> but also because of its willingness to share the resources they create\u2014for free, to anyone.<\/p>\n<p>CReM\u2019s philosophy of openness challenges the cutthroat, hypersecret culture that dominates many other life science labs. And now the lab\u2019s commitment to open-source biology, as it is known, has earned it the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/members\/great\/479422\/2017researchprogramawards.html\">2017 Sharing Research Resources Award<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/\">Association of American Medical Colleges<\/a> (AAMC), established \u201cto recognize successful models for sharing biomedical research resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a lot of skepticism at first that this plan could succeed,\u201d says <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/pulmonary\/people\/faculty\/darrellkotton\/\">Kotton<\/a>, director of CReM, who says his team is \u201chumbled and honored\u201d to receive the award. \u201cBut sharing reagents and expertise, without expectation of return, creates a culture of openness that has proven very successful for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very proud that CReM has been recognized both for the quality of their research and for setting a shining example of how science can advance through information-sharing,\u201d says Robert A. Brown, president of BU.<\/p>\n<p>CReM scientists work with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dbin\/stemcells\/what_are_ips_cells.php\">induced pluripotent stem cells<\/a>, or iPSCs, which were discovered by Shinya Yamanaka in 2006. Yamanaka figured out how to take an adult human cell and reprogram it into a stem cell with the ability\u2014theoretically\u2014to grow into any organ. CReM researchers created an efficient technique for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/2017\/crem-ips-cells-innovator\/\">reprogramming adult human blood and skin cells into iPSCs<\/a>, and in 2009 they began sharing their technology, and the resulting cell lines, free of charge with the research community. By 2010, the CReM investigators, whose work is funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nih.gov\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masslifesciences.com\/\">Massachusetts Life Sciences Center<\/a>, and others, had published a large number of patient-specific iPSC lines, including the first 100 distinctive to lung disease.<\/p>\n<p>CReM\u2019s sharing of unpublished stem cell lines has broadly impacted the lung research community, resulting in collaborations and publications with groups formerly considered CReM competitors, and CReM recently became sole iPSC repository for the 7,000 participants of the long-running <a href=\"https:\/\/www.framinghamheartstudy.org\/\">Framingham Heart Study<\/a>, <span>the nation\u2019s longest running epidemiological study<\/span>, which b<span>eg<\/span>a<span>n in 1948 and has been run by BU since 1971,<\/span> with <span>support<\/span> from<span> the<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/\">National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Kotton says that the award acknowledges not only the work of CReM, but of all the other labs and institutions that have joined in this venture into scientific sharing. \u201cJust the fact that an award like this exists,\u201d he says, \u201cshows that this way of doing research has value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This <em>BU Today<\/em> story was written by <span class=\"byline\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/author\/barbara-moran\/\">Barbara Moran<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BU\u2019s Center for Regenerative Medicine won the 2017 AAMC Sharing Research Resources Award for their commitment to open-source biology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":903,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[89,91,90],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50183"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/903"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=50183"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50183\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":50187,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/50183\/revisions\/50187"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=50183"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=50183"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=50183"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
