By exploring how the landscape has changed and the profession has evolved, and introducing\u00a0people and innovations that helped create modern medicine, the society offers perspective and inspiration for students\u00a0to carry throughout their careers.<\/p>\n<p><i>Aceso: Journal of Boston University School of Medicine Historical Society<\/i> is named for\u00a0the Greek goddess Aceso and comes from the Greek word ak\u00e9omai meaning &#8220;to heal.&#8221; Aceso represented the healing process. Unlike other gods,\u00a0she personified medicine from the patient\u2019s perspective as\u00a0a\u00a0process involving both the ill person and the physician. Aceso\u00a0was involved in\u00a0overall care and the recognition\u00a0that healthcare and well\u00ad-being took time and was an active process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis aspect of\u00a0healing\u00a0is in striking accord\u00a0with the BUSM mission and BU CARES educational\u00a0philosophy,&#8221; says Michael Sherman, BUSM &#8217;15, <i>Aceso<\/i> founder and editor-in- chief. &#8220;In our journal we hope to highlight medical history and all of its manifestations.\u00a0With <i>Aceso<\/i>, it is our intent to awaken the reader to the common ground we all share.\u00a0 By exposing readers to the vast\u00a0experience\u00a0that the humanities offer, we will provide a better\u00a0understanding of our place in medicine and society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The BUSM Historical Society is proud to announce publication of Volume II of Aceso: Journal of the Boston University School of Medicine Historical Society.
