{"id":43433,"date":"2017-02-02T12:15:21","date_gmt":"2017-02-02T17:15:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/?p=43433"},"modified":"2017-02-02T12:15:10","modified_gmt":"2017-02-02T17:15:10","slug":"researchers-engineer-new-thyroid-cells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/2017\/02\/02\/researchers-engineer-new-thyroid-cells\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers Engineer New Thyroid Cells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/camed\/files\/2017\/02\/Solid_cell_nest_of_the_thyroid_gland_-_very_high_mag-636x424.jpg\" alt=\"COM_thyroid cell\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43615\" height=\"201\" width=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2017\/02\/Solid_cell_nest_of_the_thyroid_gland_-_very_high_mag-636x424.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2017\/02\/Solid_cell_nest_of_the_thyroid_gland_-_very_high_mag-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2017\/02\/Solid_cell_nest_of_the_thyroid_gland_-_very_high_mag-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 302px) 100vw, 302px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Researchers have discovered a new efficient way to generate thyroid cells, known as thyrocytes, using genetically modified <span>embryonic stem cells<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The findings, which appear in the journal <em>Stem Cell Reports, <\/em>are the first step to developing a similar protocol using human stem cells that will allow the modeling of thyroid disease to better understand its causes and the development of therapies.<\/p>\n<p>Thyroid disorders affect approximately 10 percent of the U.S. population and include Grave\u2019s disease or Hashimoto\u2019s disease, which can result in hyper or hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, goiter or cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from BUSM engineered mouse embryonic stem cells cultured in the lab to express a genetic switch for a specific gene, Nkx2-1, that is important for thyroid development.
