This October, a\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>new\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>program \u2013 the Master\u2019s of Science in Health Sciences Education (MSHSE) \u2013 was unanimously approved by BU School of Medicine,\u00a0<\/span>the University Council Committee on Graduate Programs and Policies\u00a0<\/span>and the University Council. The\u00a0<\/span>program is offered through the Division of Graduate Medical Sciences (GMS), in collaboration with the School of Education (SED); Jeffrey Markuns, MD,\u00a0<\/span>EdM,\u00a0<\/span> assistant professor\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>Family Medicine serves\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0 Program Director.\u00a0Recruitment is underway for the inaugural class, who will matriculate in fall 2017. The program offers those with degrees in nursing, medicine and other health-related areas an\u00a0<\/span>opportunity\u00a0<\/span>to pursue\u00a0graduate studies\u00a0in medical education. The MSHSE provides\u00a0training in the principles of education and teaching that are applicable and adaptable to a specific health sciences discipline.\u00a0It is designed to improve teaching skills and other aspects of health sciences education to help students advance their careers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis program will educate and train faculty from all the health professional fields who are committed to establishing themselves as master educators,\u201d said Markuns. \u201cThe broad range of required courses along with a mentored practicum will produce world-class faculty in health sciences education.\u201d<\/p>\n

A certificate option is available for those with limited time and resources or who already have a strong background in general education, as well as the part- and full-time options to pursue the Master\u2019s degree \u00a0The certificate and Master\u2019s degree options are available for the tuition remission benefit for eligible BU faculty and staff The program is expected to be initiated on campus in the classroom, but then students will be able to pursue a schedule that allows for part-time participation.\u00a0 Practicum based, it is\u00a0<\/span>designed for\u00a0students to apply\u00a0<\/span>new skills from\u00a0their studies directly to issues they already are seeking to tackle in their daily work.<\/p>\n
