{"id":38306,"date":"2016-09-23T08:15:43","date_gmt":"2016-09-23T12:15:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/?p=38306"},"modified":"2016-09-23T09:07:29","modified_gmt":"2016-09-23T13:07:29","slug":"pediatric-workforce-must-address-opioid-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/2016\/09\/23\/pediatric-workforce-must-address-opioid-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Pediatric Workforce Must Address Opioid Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>In response to the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation, doctors say it\u2019s time for the pediatric workforce to do more to address opioid addiction<\/h4>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38307\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38307\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/camed\/files\/2016\/09\/COM-Hadland_Scott-e1474575628835.jpg\" alt=\"Scott Hadland\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38307\" height=\"258\" width=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38307\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scott Hadland<em><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now a group of pediatricians is calling on the pediatric workforce &#8211; who have in many settings &#8211; avoided addressing substance use among their patients, to do more to address opioid addiction among young people.<\/p>\n<p>In a Comment in <em>The Lancet<\/em>, Scott Hadland, MD, pediatrician and addiction specialist at BUSM and BMC, and colleagues highlight the need for providers who care for youth \u2013 including pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants \u2013 to intervene early with evidence-based treatment including medication-assisted treatment, potentially including Suboxone when appropriate. Many young people continue to see their pediatric provider well into young adulthood, which is precisely when these patients first struggle with opioid addiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo date, the pediatric workforce has been inadequately prepared and poorly mobilized to confront the opioid epidemic,\u201d explains Hadland. \u201cPeople who care for youth have a unique opportunity to intervene before addiction becomes deeply engrained in a young person&#8217;s life and can prevent a lifetime of potential harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In reference to the AAP recommendation, Hadland and colleagues note this is the first time a major pediatric organization has promoted medication-assisted treatment for adolescents.\u00a0 In 2015 Addiction Medicine became an officially recognized board-certified subspecialty of medicine, for the first time allowing a special training pathway for pediatricians and family physicians who want to specialize in treating young people with addiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrug overdoses kill more people annually than do motor vehicle accidents in many places in the United States,\u201d says Hadland. \u201cTwo out of 3 people in treatment for opioid addiction first used opioids before the age of 25, and 1 in 3 used them before the age of 18.
