{"id":32301,"date":"2016-04-26T11:47:24","date_gmt":"2016-04-26T15:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/?p=32301"},"modified":"2016-04-26T11:47:42","modified_gmt":"2016-04-26T15:47:42","slug":"study-finds-readability-of-dense-breast-notifications-poor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/2016\/04\/26\/study-finds-readability-of-dense-breast-notifications-poor\/","title":{"rendered":"Study Finds Readability of Dense Breast Notifications Poor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>About half of American women have dense breasts, which makes it harder for mammograms to identify cancer and add to a woman\u2019s risk for cancer.\u00a0 Nearly half of U.S. states have passed legislation requiring women to be notified of their breast density when they receive mammogram results, despite no scientific evidence or guidelines for appropriate care for women with dense breasts.<\/p>\n<p>According to a new study, which appears in the <em>Journal of the American Medical Association<\/em>, there is wide variability in dense breast notifications (DBNs) across states and most are difficult to read and understand. Most DBNs are written at a literacy level exceeding that of the state\u2019s population, suggesting that many women will find the information difficult to comprehend. This may create uncertainty for women attempting to make personalized decisions about supplemental breast screening and may heighten disparities in breast cancer outcomes.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"550\" height=\"310\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/buniverse\/interface\/embed\/embed.html?v=FKAhw0\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and the VA Boston Healthcare System compared the content, readability and understandability of DBNs across the country.
