{"id":29984,"date":"2016-03-04T10:18:31","date_gmt":"2016-03-04T15:18:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/?p=29984"},"modified":"2020-10-30T10:54:47","modified_gmt":"2020-10-30T14:54:47","slug":"alumni-share-experiences-black-history-at-busm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/2016\/03\/04\/alumni-share-experiences-black-history-at-busm\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumni Share Experiences: Black History at BUSM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In honor of February being Black History Month, the BUSM Alumni Association sponsored the special event, \u201cAn Interactive Discussion: Black History at BUSM.\u201d<span><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/camed\/files\/2016\/03\/Black-History-at-BUSM-57C-e1457104140594.jpg\" alt=\"Black History at BUSM -57C\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-29986\" width=\"650\" height=\"389\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The inaugural event drew\u00a0a crowd of\u00a0almost 100\u00a0alumni,\u00a0students, faculty and staff from the Medical Campus and Boston Medical Center\u00a0(BMC),\u00a0where\u00a0four alumni shared a broad spectrum of ideas and experiences\u00a0related to\u00a0attending\u00a0the School of Medicine.\u00a0Through their candid recollections, some going back as far as\u00a0the\u00a01940s, the audience learned about their experiences, both at BUSM and more generally as physicians of color.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Conceived by Dr. Kate Phaneuf\u00a0(BUSM \u201988)\u00a0as an opportunity to increase the recruitment of underrepresented students and faculty,\u00a0the 90-minute\u00a0panel discussion\u00a0was moderated by Dr. Thea James,\u00a0associate professor of\u00a0emergency\u00a0medicine\u00a0and assistant\u00a0dean\u00a0of diversity\u00a0and\u00a0multicultural affairs\u00a0at BUSM and\u00a0Vice President of Mission\u00a0and Associate Chief Medical Officer at BMC where she has been a\u00a0physician\u00a0since 1995. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As part of the program introduction James explained that BUSM is ranked among the top 10 medical schools in the U.S.\u00a0for interviewing\u00a0under-represented minority applicants. Further she explained that \u201capproximately 15 percent of the BUSM student body is made up of underrepresented minorities, which is strong compared to medical schools nationally.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>James raised important questions about whether the high diversity ranking of BUSM had a positive or negative impact on the student experience. \u00a0\u201cWhere are we now and how has the past 62 years shaped the student experiences at BUSM?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u00a0Event speakers included:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span><\/span><span>June Jackson Christmas, MD,\u00a0&#8217;49 (Psychiatry, BUSM Living Legend, Former\u00a0New York City\u00a0Commissioner of Mental Health and Mental Retardation Service)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><\/span><span>Jamel Yolanda Patterson, MD,\u00a0&#8217;88 (Emergency Medicine,\u00a0Ageno\u00a0Foundation International\u00a0Board of Directors)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><\/span><span>Frederick G. Powell, MD, PhD,\u00a0&#8217;11 (Anesthesiology, BMC)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span><\/span><span>Louis W. Sullivan, MD,\u00a0&#8217;58 (Internal Medicine\/Hematology, President Emeritus Morehouse Medical College, Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient, BUSM Living Legend, Former Secretary of the\u00a0U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span>BUSM\u00a0Associate Dean for Alumni Affairs\u00a0Jean Ramsey, MD, said, \u201cIt is so important to have forums such as this event where we can come together and share our experiences. We all share a commitment to promoting and embracing diversity and social justice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I&#8217;m pleased that we had such an engaging conversation around this subject.
