Black History Month<\/a>\u00a0provides us with the opportunity to consider the many ways Black Americans have contributed to American life, history, and culture. Since\u00a01976<\/a>, as a nation, we have come together each February to celebrate the achievements of Black Americans, while also recognizing the continued struggles for equity, inclusion, and racial justice. We begin this Black History month,\u00a0just after\u00a0the release of the video recorded beating on\u00a0Tyre Nichols<\/a>\u00a0by Memphis police. This\u00a0brutal assault<\/a>, yet another devastating reminder of the continued need for justice and police accountability, serves as a reminder of the toll that these assaults have on our\u00a0mental health<\/a>, particularly for\u00a0Black Americans<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This Black History Month, I urge you to enjoy the many activities and educational events happening in and around Boston such as the Black History Month Weekend at the Museum of Science<\/a>\u00a0this upcoming weekend and tours of the\u00a0Museum of African American History<\/a>. If you have children, or are young at heart, you can \u201cStep into Art<\/a>\u201d that is inspired by the renowned\u00a0Kehinde Wiley<\/a>, or enjoy his work as well as the work of other Black artists at the exhibit \u201cTouching Roots: Black Ancestral Legacies in the Americas<\/a>\u201d at the Museum of Fine Arts. If you are a homebody, you can hop online to check out more about\u00a0Black history in Massachusetts<\/a>,\u00a0but be sure to support the dozens of\u00a0Black restaurants and business<\/a>\u00a0in and around Boston.<\/p>\n

At Boston University,\u00a0several events and programs explore\u00a0race, racism and Black American experiences in biomedical research and academic medicine. On Feb. 1,\u00a0Dr. Shoumita Dasgupta<\/a>\u00a0will present on the\u00a0history of eugenics<\/a>\u00a0at 11:45 a.m. in L112. On the Charles River Campus\u00a0\u00a0several lectures include:\u00a0\u201cThe Uses and Abuses of Jim Crow\u201d<\/a>\u00a0on Feb 7, and a\u00a0lecture<\/a>\u00a0on Black women and environmental storytelling on the Feb. 23. On Feb. 8, the anniversary of Rebecca Lee Crumpler\u2019s (MED 1864) birth, join us for a\u00a0virtual panel<\/a>\u00a0as we recognize the achievements of four distinguished alumnae, who, like Crumpler, went on to practice more innovative and inclusive medicine. The following day,\u00a0Feb. 9,\u00a0the Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology will host their DEIJ Black History Month Symposium: \u201cBiocultural Perspectives on Anatomization,\u201d where Anthropology faculty at American University and the University of South Carolina at Columbia will explore race and the anatomy of the body in L-405 from 2-4 p.m.<\/p>\n

Finally, this Black History Month visit the Boston Common and take in\u00a0the Embrace<\/a>, the new statue in honor of Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr. This piece reminds us that love, solidarity and community were always at the core of the Black experience in the United States.<\/p>\n
