{"id":114621,"date":"2023-06-28T09:26:18","date_gmt":"2023-06-28T13:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/?p=114621"},"modified":"2023-06-28T09:33:58","modified_gmt":"2023-06-28T13:33:58","slug":"gwendolyn-beacham-phd-receives-jane-coffin-childs-fund-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/2023\/06\/28\/gwendolyn-beacham-phd-receives-jane-coffin-childs-fund-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Gwendolyn Beacham, PhD, Receives Jane Coffin Childs Fund Fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Postdoctoral fellow <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.bu.edu\/Gwendolyn.Beacham\">Gwendolyn Beacham<\/a>, PhD, has been selected as a 2023 fellow by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jccfund.org\/\">Jane Coffin Childs Fund for Medical Research (JCC)<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jccfund.org\/fellows\/\">Twenty-seven researchers<\/a> across a broad range of biomedical disciplines were chosen for fellowships based on their doctoral research, innovative research plans and their chosen scientific mentors. <img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/camed\/files\/2023\/06\/PhD-Beacham-head-shot.jpg\" alt=\"Headshot Gwendolyn Beacham PhD\" class=\"alignright wp-image-114624\" width=\"157\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2023\/06\/PhD-Beacham-head-shot.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2023\/06\/PhD-Beacham-head-shot-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2023\/06\/PhD-Beacham-head-shot-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 157px) 100vw, 157px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beacham works in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/hagedornlab\/\">labs<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.bu.edu\/Elliott.Hagedorn\">Elliott Hagedorn<\/a>, PhD and <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.bu.edu\/Christopher.Chen\">Christopher Chen<\/a>, MD, PhD, researching the mechanisms underlying endothelial transmigration. The endothelium is a single-cell layer that lines all blood vessels. Based on preliminary data found using the zebrafish model system, Beacham believes that endocytosis, a process by which cells absorb external material by engulfing it with their cell membrane, is important for controlling the selective transmigration of circulating cells across the endothelium and into extravascular tissues.<\/p>\n<p>This research may help improve the efficiencies of cancer therapies that rely on endothelial transmigration, such as bone marrow transplants and engineered CAR T-cells.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Jane Coffin Childs Fund has been successful since its launch in catalyzing the careers of scientific leaders who have gone on to make major scientific contributions that have advanced human health and fundamental science\u201d said Sue Biggins, PhD, chair of JCC\u2019s scientific advisory board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a point of pride to see the impact and outcomes that the funding of nearly 1,700 postdoctoral fellows has produced since 1944,\u201d said Biggins.<\/p>\n<p>Fellows are funded for a three-year term and receive flexible stipend support.
