Celebrated on June 19, this year Juneteenth<span>\u00a0<\/span>falls on a Sunday. As a result, BU will observe Juneteenth on Friday, June 17,<span>\u00a0<\/span>despite<span>\u00a0<\/span>Monday\u2019s federal holiday,<span>\u00a0<\/span>June 20. (BU added Juneteenth to our academic calendar before the<span>\u00a0federal\u00a0<\/span>government adopted the holiday. In the future, BU will observe the federal holiday.)<\/p>\n<p>Communities across the United States have long celebrated the anniversary of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.juneteenth.com\/history\/\">June 19, 1865<\/a>, as the day slavery was truly abolished. Although some states recognized the holiday<span>\u00a0<\/span>as early as<span>\u00a0<\/span>1980, it<span>\u00a0<\/span>only became<span>\u00a0<\/span>a federal holiday<span>\u00a0<\/span>in<span>\u00a0<\/span>2021.<\/p>\n<p>Juneteenth<span>\u00a0<\/span>provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of the day in our history, achieved only after a bloody civil war.<span>\u00a0<\/span>In addition to celebration, reflection and remembrance,<span>\u00a0<\/span>consider<span>\u00a0<\/span>participating<span>\u00a0<\/span>in a Boston Medical Center-hosted virtual, guided discussion with<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lmerchiefrazier.com\/about-lmerchiefrazier\">L&#8217;Merchie Frazier<\/a>, from the Museum of African American History, Boston\/Nantucket<span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>on Thursday, June 16, at noon.
