{"id":93745,"date":"2021-04-20T11:50:19","date_gmt":"2021-04-20T15:50:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/?page_id=93745"},"modified":"2022-02-11T09:04:11","modified_gmt":"2022-02-11T14:04:11","slug":"parkinsons-disease","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/giving\/where-can-i-give\/explore-our-research\/parkinsons-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Parkinson&#8217;s Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For more than three decades, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/parkinsonsdisease\/\"><strong>Parkinson\u2019s Disease &amp; Movement Disorders Center<\/strong><\/a> at Boston University Medical School has been at the forefront of a worldwide effort to combat Parkinson\u2019s disease (PD) and improve the lives of those who have it. PD affects more than 1 million people in the United States annually, with at least 60,000 new cases diagnosed each year. The chronic, progressive neurodegenerative aging disorder is the second most common one, after Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n<p>The BUSM center has been designated an American Parkinson\u2019s Disease Association Center for Advanced Research\u2014one of only eight nationwide. Using an interdisciplinary approach, the center\u2019s clinicians and researchers work together to provide comprehensive care, from diagnosis through lifetime treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists believe PD arises from an interplay of genetics and the environment, including exposure to pesticides and heavy metals. BUSM researchers are investigating both fronts. They develop new drugs and therapies, which they test in myriad clinical trials, including the multicenter Parkinson\u2019s Progression Markers Initiative Study, Telehealth Treatment of Depression in Parkinson\u2019s, and Evaluation of a New Medication for Early Parkinson\u2019s. BUSM researchers are also identifying new compounds that appear to protect brain cells from damage, possibly delaying onset or slowing progression.
