{"id":704,"date":"2015-03-26T16:01:56","date_gmt":"2015-03-26T20:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/?page_id=704"},"modified":"2026-08-17T11:19:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T15:19:38","slug":"field-specific-advisors","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/student-affairs\/md\/advising-career-development\/academies\/field-specific-advisors\/","title":{"rendered":"Field Specific Advising Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Field Specific Advisors (FSAs) are a component of the larger Advising Network\/Career Advising Program.<\/h4>\n<h4><strong>Role of FSAs<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span>Faculty are selected to serve as FSAs for their commitment to student advising.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Faculty are<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>well informed about their field, up to date on the residency application process for their specialty and the characteristics of various programs around the country.<\/li>\n<li><span>Faculty <\/span>assist their students with selecting and approving their 4th year schedule.<\/li>\n<li><span>Faculty assist their students w<\/span>ith the selection of away electives, if appropriate. View<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2024\/11\/Elective-Guidelines.pdf\">Elective Guidelines<\/a> for guidance on elective selection.<\/li>\n<li><span>Faculty helps t<\/span>he student realistically assess their own competitiveness within their selected specialty.<\/li>\n<li><span>Faculty helps<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the student choose the most appropriate residency programs based on the student\u2019s profile, to apply to and assist with the creation of the Rank Order List.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Student Responsibility<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Submitting an FSA using the FSA request form.<\/li>\n<li>Keeping track of FSA assignments and communicating with Student Affairs.<\/li>\n<li>Contacting their FSA to schedule appointments for advising.<\/li>\n<li>Informing their FSA of deadlines for approving\/submitting their 4th year schedules.<\/li>\n<li>Keeping their FSA up-to-date on grades\/evaluations, residency applications, interview schedules,\u00a0 etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Not sure what to discuss with your FSA? Use the <a href=\"\/camed\/files\/2026\/06\/FSA-Checklist-Student-Version.pdf\">FSA Checklist for Students<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong>Selecting an FSA<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As you move through your 3<sup>rd<\/sup> year clerkships, keep in mind those physicians with whom you have worked with as you consider selecting an FSA. Student Affairs maintains a <a href=\"https:\/\/bushare-my.sharepoint.com\/:w:\/g\/personal\/ylvaduke_bu_edu\/IQCv3SOpO9syTY1Nsopl_unXAY21Gp9Cr9UvSFsVv1Sn95A?e=vBt2Kp\">list of physicians serving as FSAs<\/a>,\u00a0which is updated regularly.<\/p>\n<p>3rd year students will be able to request their FSA after their class meeting in the Fall. You can only have one (1) FSA assigned at a time, but you are able to change your FSA if you decide to change the specialty that you are applying into. It is perfectly okay to have an assigned FSA and meet with other physicians if you\u2019re trying to decide between specialties. However, only your OFFICIALLY ASSIGNED FSA will be allowed to sign off on your schedule. <strong>Please contact the Student Affairs Office to notify them of any FSA changes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span>Note: The FSA Leads <\/span><span>are also available as a resource to learn more about a specific specialty and diverse career opportunities.
