Advisors are an important resource throughout your four years, as they can help you discuss your potential career interests as well as share insights about their professional journey. Remember, each medical student is assigned a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/student-affairs\/career-planning\/academies\/\">team of advisors<\/a> as soon as they begin their career, starting with Core Advisors (AMEs) and Student Affairs Deans and eventually Field Specific Advisors in the fourth year.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Electives<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are no specific electives that students need to complete prior to graduating.\u00a0 Students choose electives based on various criteria including specialty interest and seeking letters of recommendation for their ERAS application; away electives to get a better sense of a program and \u201caudition\u201d; enhancing one\u2019s skills in a perceived area of deficit; conducting QI research with a faculty member; or choosing an elective that one thinks will be interesting and may never get the chance to do again (e.g., pediatric cardiology for a student applying into urology).<\/p>\n<p>These <a href=\"\/camed\/files\/2024\/06\/Elective-Guidelines-5.28.24.pdf\">Elective Guidelines<\/a>\u00a0include a list of suggested electives per specialty that may be useful to consider.<\/p>\n<p>Additional resources of note include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Career Fairs<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/student-affairs\/md\/student-activities-groups\/\">Career Interest Groups<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/offices-services\/md-program-offices\/studentaffairsoffice\/advising-career-development\/class-meetings-2024-2025\/\">Class Meetings<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2024\/11\/Elective-Guidelines.pdf\">Electives<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bu.digication.com\/home_guest.digi\">ePortfolios<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Lastly, there are <a href=\"\/camed\/files\/2025\/01\/Faculty-for-Guided-Exploration-2024-2025.pdf\">a number of faculty members<\/a>\u00a0ready to serve as a resource for you to learn more about a specific specialty and diverse career opportunities.
