{"id":62495,"date":"2018-10-15T09:20:44","date_gmt":"2018-10-15T13:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/?page_id=62495"},"modified":"2025-06-10T14:05:42","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T18:05:42","slug":"voluntary-faculty-appointments-and-promotions-guidelines","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/offices-services\/faculty-affairs-office\/voluntary-faculty-appointments-and-promotions-guidelines\/","title":{"rendered":"Chobanian &#038; Avedisian School of Medicine Voluntary Faculty Appointments and Promotions Guidelines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2024\/06\/Voluntary-Faculty-guidelines_6.26.24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Voluntary Faculty Guidelines<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Voluntary<\/strong><strong> Faculty Appointments at Boston University Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine.\u00a0 See separate policy\u00a0 for faculty at the school&#8217;s affiliates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We provide faculty appointments to voluntary faculty who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teach approximately 40 hours annually in the curriculum for medical or graduate students, or<\/li>\n<li>Are the primary supervisor for the school&#8217;s current doctorate student(s), or<\/li>\n<li>Are PIs of grants through the school.<\/li>\n<li>Supervises MD, MA\/MS, or PhD students as part of formal School-Industry research or internships programs as defined by formal written agreements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Faculty who resign from the school may become voluntary faculty if they meet one of the criteria above.\u00a0 (Faculty who move to the school&#8217;s affiliated hospitals may become affiliated faculty.)<\/p>\n<p>Criteria for appointment and promotion of Voluntary Faculty are the same as for faculty on the medical campus:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/guidelines-for-faculty-appointments-promotions-in-the-school-of-medicine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Criteria.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Voluntary Faculty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Individuals teaching the school&#8217;s students in-person in the formal curriculum as outlined below for at least 40 hours per year.<\/p>\n<table width=\"714\" height=\"381\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" width=\"667\" style=\"background-color: #91cefa; width: 667px;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Eligible Curricula<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 5px;\">\n<td width=\"318\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Medical Curriculum<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"348\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PhD &amp; Master\u2019s Curriculum<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"318\">Any course, clerkship, or rotation listed in the BU Academic Catalog<\/td>\n<td width=\"348\">Any course listed in the BU Academic Catalog<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"318\">Any ECS approved or pending elective for longitudinal usage<\/td>\n<td width=\"348\">Formal standing School-Biotech or pharmaceutical Internships Program.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 1px;\">\n<td width=\"318\">Longitudinal student experiences approved by Student Affairs Office<\/td>\n<td width=\"348\">Primary dissertation mentor of a PhD student if approved by GMS graduate program.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Activities that do not warrant or require a faculty appointment:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Advising and mentoring outside of School programs or courses, research collaborations, serving on PhD dissertation committees, and off-campus summer research electives.<\/li>\n<li>Teaching affiliated hospitals residents and fellows<\/li>\n<li>Per diem or temporary employees interacting with the school&#8217;s students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Continuation<\/strong><strong> of Voluntary Faculty Appointments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Voluntary faculty are reviewed annually for continued teaching or research service, as per the criteria above.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Voluntary faculty appointments end when their student completes their degree or their grant ends.<\/li>\n<li>To continue their faculty appointment, voluntary faculty who are not listed by any course directors must document continued teaching, research as PI on a grant through the school, or service as primary advisor of a PhD student.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>[Approved by the BUSM Executive Committee on June 21, 2017]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>[Revised on June 26, 2024]<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Voluntary Faculty Guidelines Voluntary Faculty Appointments at Boston University Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine.\u00a0 See separate policy\u00a0 for faculty at the school&#8217;s affiliates.
