Faculty interested in applying must submit a preliminary proposal for review by an internal selection committee. Below are the available funding opportunities along with their respective internal submission deadlines.<\/p>\n<p><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h6 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">National Cancer Institute Pathways to Independence Award \u2502 April 16, 2026<\/h6><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"> <a name=\"ncipathways\"><\/a> The goal of the<a href=\"https:\/\/grants.nih.gov\/grants\/guide\/pa-files\/PAR-23-287.html\"> National Cancer Institute (NCI) Pathways to Independence Award<\/a> is to help postdoctoral researchers complete necessary mentored training in order to transition to independent tenure-track (or equivalent) faculty positions, particularly in cancer control, cancer prevention, and cancer data sciences.<\/p>\n<p>While the postdoctoral researcher\u00a0is solely responsible for submitting their materials for internal review,\u00a0both the researcher (candidate) and mentor are involved in submitting the external application. The mentor(s) the candidate identifies should be active investigators in the area of the candidate\u2019s proposed research. Additionally, the mentor(s) are expected to propose a well-conceived plan for 1-2 years of substantive mentored research training and career development that will help their investigators become competitive candidates for tenure-track faculty positions and prepare them to launch robust, independent research programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FUNDING INFORMATION: <\/strong>Up to <strong>five\u00a0years of support in two continuous phases<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>initial\/K99 phase: up to two years of mentored postdoctoral research training and career development<\/li>\n<li>independent\/R00 phase: up to three years of independent research support, contingent on satisfactory progress during the K99 phase and an approved, independent tenure-track (or equivalent) faculty position<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the K99 phase, candidates receive <strong>up to $100,000 per year<\/strong> for salary along with other research development benefits (up to $30,000 per year). Salary for mentors is not allowed.<\/p>\n<p>In the R00 phase, total costs can be <strong>up to $249,000 per year<\/strong>, including salary, fringe benefits, research costs, and applicable indirect costs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ELIGIBILITY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is no citizenship requirement for applicants. Additionally, candidates must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have <strong>no more than two years of postdoctoral research experience<\/strong> as of the external application deadline<\/li>\n<li>Be in mentored, postdoctoral training positions<\/li>\n<li>Have a clinical or research doctorate. Though, clinicians in a clinical faculty position that indicates independence in clinical responsibilities but not in research may also be eligible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Individuals are <strong>NOT eligible<\/strong> if they:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have currently or previously held an independent research faculty or tenure-track faculty position, or its equivalent, in academia, industry or elsewhere; or<\/li>\n<li>Have more than two years of related postdoctoral research training at the time of initial application or resubmission; or<\/li>\n<li>Have been an independent PD\/PI on NIH research grants (e.g. R01, R03, R21), NIH career development awards (e.g., K01, K07, K08, K23, K25), or other peer-reviewed NIH or non-NIH research grants over $100,000 direct costs per year, or Project Leaders on sub-projects of program project (P01) or center (P50) grants or the equivalent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>INTERNAL SELECTION PROCESS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The internal selection process depends on whether your grants are managed by BU or Boston Medical Center (BMC). This funding mechanism is designed to support creative, exploratory, cutting-edge research in well-established research laboratories, under the direction of established investigators. The objective of the program is to support projects that may be too innovative and speculative for traditional funding sources but still have a high likelihood of producing important findings. It is expected that investigations supported by these grants will yield high impact findings and result in major grant applications and significant publications in high impact journals.<\/p>\n<p>Studies should be related to either normal human brain development or specifically identified disease states. This includes molecular and clinical neuroscience as well as studies of neural, sensory, motor, cognitive, behavioral and emotional functioning in health and disease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>FUNDING INFORMATION: <\/strong>Up to $150,000 (direct costs) over two years. Exact dates will be provided by the Brain Research Foundation upon application approval. Funds must be utilized within the grant period.
