We aim to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Increase students\u2019 awareness of the breadth of Pathology &amp; Laboratory Medicine during the pre-clinical years;<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate the integral role of pathologists in providing clinical care to patients;<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate how knowledge gained during the pre-clinical curriculum forms the fundamental knowledge base for the practice of pathology.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Increase medical students\u2019 awareness and understanding of the breadth of pathology;<\/li>\n<li>Facilitate medical students wishing to explore pathology through engaging and interactive lectures and demonstrations;<\/li>\n<li>Increase the number of senior medical students choosing pathology as a career \u2013 can be measured by monitoring graduating class Match statistics.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We will accomplish these objectives by providing opportunities that span the broad scope of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Facilitating shadowing experiences within both Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, at the microscope and grossing bench, including:\n<ul>\n<li>Pathology Case Sign-Outs at the microscope;<\/li>\n<li>Forensic Pathology &amp; Autopsy observation, including a day trip to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner;<\/li>\n<li>Hands-on Surgical Cytopathology frozen section workshop;<\/li>\n<li>Microbiology Plate Rounds<\/li>\n<li>Tour of the BMC Blood Bank<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Speaker Series &amp; Career Lunches<\/li>\n<li>Case Presentations<\/li>\n<li>Dissemination of Departmental Research Opportunities<\/li>\n<li>Journal Club-type events<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol><\/ol>\n<p>Resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apcprods.org\/opportunities\">A list compiled by the College of American Pathologists (CAP)<\/a> of both funded and non-funded clinical and research opportunities open to medical students considering taking additional time during medical school to pursue Pathology-oriented training in Pathology programs across the country.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pathologyoutlines.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Pathology Outlines<\/a> is an authoritative all-around resource for gathering pathology-related information quickly and easily &#8211; the &#8216;Up-to-date&#8217; of Pathology<\/li>\n<li>The Intersociety Council for Pathology Information&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/pathologytraining.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website <\/a>of <em>Training Resources for Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. <\/em>This is an excellent resource for finding information about a career in Pathology.\n<p style=\"margin: 0in; margin-bottom: .0001pt;\">\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mission: The mission of the Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine Pathology &amp; Laboratory Medicine Interest Group (PaLMIG) is to provide medical students with early exposure to, and opportunities in, the field of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
