{"id":2526,"date":"2015-06-11T12:13:04","date_gmt":"2015-06-11T16:13:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/?page_id=2526"},"modified":"2025-06-10T14:54:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-10T18:54:37","slug":"health-treatment","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/offices-services\/faculty-affairs-office\/health-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"Policy for Separation of Academic\/Physician Roles in the Provision of Health Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"\/camed\/files\/2018\/10\/Policy_Separation-of-Academic.Physician-Roles-in-Provision-of-Health-Treatment-Rev.-09.26.2018.pdf\">Policy for Separation of Academic\/Physician Roles in the Provision of Health Treatment<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Policy Statement: <\/strong>Any BUSM faculty or health professional who provides clinical care to a BUSM medical student for any health services, including mental health services, must have no involvement in the academic evaluation or promotion of the student.<\/p>\n<p>Such faculty, staff, and health professionals may give lectures but may not lead small-group discussions or serve as a preceptor, course director, or member of promotions or appeals committees on issues involving such a student.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty obligation:<\/strong> Faculty must avoid any involvement in the academic evaluation or promotion of any student for whom they have provided health services. A faculty member who determines that s\/he will be involved in the academic evaluation or promotion of a student for whom s\/he has provided health care must notify the course\/clerkship director immediately and must recuse themselves from the academic evaluation or promotion of the student. The course\/clerkship director must reassign the student to a new clinical site, remove the faculty member from any role in supervision and\/or evaluation of the student, and assign the student to a new preceptor.\u00a0 Course or clerkship directors should not provide direct patient care to students for these reasons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student obligation: <\/strong>During the scheduling process, students must notify BUSM\u2019s Registrar if the site where they receive health care precludes their assignment to a specific clinical site.
