As a medical student, you\u2019ll work closely with your assigned AMEs throughout your four years \u2014 from your first day in the classroom to your final clinical rotations. By the end of your four years, you will have at least two AMEs who will know you well as a person and professional.<\/p>\n<h4>What is an AME?<\/h4>\n<p>Academy Medical Educators are selected clinical faculty and are considered to be our most expert educators.\u00a0 All of the faculty work in the BMC health system or at the VA.\u00a0 AMEs serve in two essential roles:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Core Faculty in Doctoring Courses:<\/strong> You will have an AME who facilitates your Doctoring 1 small group, and another who facilitates your Doctoring 2 small group. AMEs teach foundational clinical skills, including communication, physical examination, and clinical reasoning, through small-group, case-based learning. You\u2019ll engage in role plays, work with standardized patients, and receive hands-on skills training and feedback in a supportive environment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Academic Advisors:<\/strong> You will be assigned an AME advisor who will remain with you throughout your time at BU Chobanian. Your AME Advisor is your go-to person for academic guidance, career planning, and professional development. Whether it\u2019s a scheduled check-in or an impromptu conversation, your AME is there to support you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Longitudinal Educational Coaches<\/h4>\n<p>During your first and second year, you will practice personal goal setting with your AME. In your 3rd-year clerkships, your AME will be your educational coach who will help you reflect on your clinical behaviors and you assessment of your current competency level based on the feedback you have received and the evaluations completed by faculty about you; identify specific clinical skills areas for practice, observation and feedback; and help you create an action plan. This helps you grow into a confident, competent, and compassionate physician.<\/p>\n<h4>Why AMEs Matter<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Continuity:<\/strong> You\u2019ll build a lasting relationship with your AME, who will get to know your strengths, challenges, and goals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mentorship:<\/strong> AMEs are passionate educators and mentors who are deeply invested in your success.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assessment &amp; Feedback:<\/strong> Through direct observation and regular interaction, AMEs provide meaningful, formative feedback to help you grow.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Support:<\/strong> From navigating coursework to preparing for residency, your AME is a trusted advisor every step of the way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What\u2019s Their Commitment?<\/h4>\n<p>AMEs dedicate one afternoon per week year-round to teaching, advising, and assessing students.
