While we don\u2019t yet know the full budget impact of the cancellations and delays in research funding from the various federal agencies, our researchers are continuing their innovation on the frontline of science unrelenting, pursuing new grants. Whatever the outcome, we will remain committed to our goal creating the optimal campus community to learn, teach and discover.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty Honors<\/strong>: Our faculty continue to receive well-deserved recognition. If you received an honor or award that is not listed, please contact Maria now to update our list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Publications: <\/strong>Our faculty continue to receive significant mainstream media coverage for their exceptional published research. Here are the top research stories for Academic year 2024-5.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jesse Mez\u2019s study in JAMA Network reported that the odds of acquiring Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) increased 34% with each year men played ice hockey. Another study in Neurology showed those with CTE and a family history of mental iIlness correlated with aggression in middle age.<\/li>\n<li>Thor Stein\u2019s study in JAMA Neurology found a link between playing contact sports and parkinsonism in individuals with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy.<\/li>\n<li>Rachel Fearn\u2019s study in Cell uncovered the structure of a critical component in the deadly Nipah virus.<\/li>\n<li>Ivana Delalle\u2019s study in Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia revealed disease biology, risk for progression, and the potential for a novel blood test for Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/li>\n<li>Mara Murray Horwitz\u2019s study<span>\u00a0<\/span>in the Annals of Internal Medicine found unconditional cash transfers following childbirth increased breastfeeding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Academic Year 2025\u2019s largest new\/renewal grants,<\/strong> as of May 1:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025-948x1024.jpg\" alt=\"2025 Grants Awarded\" width=\"948\" height=\"1024\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-135289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025-948x1024.jpg 948w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025-589x636.jpg 589w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025-768x830.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025-1422x1536.jpg 1422w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025-333x360.jpg 333w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025-474x512.jpg 474w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025-666x720.jpg 666w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025-926x1000.jpg 926w, https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025.jpg 1556w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 948px) 100vw, 948px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"\/camed\/files\/2025\/06\/Grants2025.pdf\">See the full-page PDF<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Foundation awards of note:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$5.8M from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to Katherine Iverson, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry, to evaluate an intervention for people who have experienced intimate partner violence.<\/li>\n<li>$1.1M from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to Finn Hawkins, MBBCh, associate professor of medicine, for the project \u201cAutologous cell-based therapy to cure CF lung disease.\u201d\u00a0 This research is part of the larger CreM project to use lung disease-specific iPS cells to model a variety of lung diseases and with these models track disease pathogenesis and develop of novel gene therapies.<\/li>\n<li>$500,000 from the Bob Woodruff Foundation to Tara Galovski, PhD, professor of psychiatry, for the Women Veterans Network, a national program supporting the wellbeing of women who have served in the military.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/offices-services\/office-of-the-dean\/ay2025-reports\/\">Click here<\/a> to read the latest news from our associate deans, chairs, center and institute directors.<\/p>\n<p>Serving as provost and dean has been a privilege.
