For the first time, students have the flexibility to select their own electives and customize their schedule, allowing them to focus on areas of interest and prepare for their future specialties. Below, you will find general information on the requirements, key dates, and structure of the fourth year. Additional class-specific details are provided further down the page.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Promotion to 4th Year<\/strong>: You must pass all third-year clerkships and exams. The Fall term consists of Blocks 9-15, the Spring term consists of Blocks 16-21.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weeks vs. Contact Hours vs. Credits<\/strong><br \/>\nEach week consists of 40 contact hours \u2013 the equivalent of 1 credit. Students must earn a minimum of 36 credits (1440 contact hours) to graduate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Required Weeks vs. Allotted Weeks<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>There are 52 schedulable weeks during the M4 year. Students may have unscheduled periods of time, during which they are responsible for documenting work toward their longitudinal requirement.<\/li>\n<li>Students must complete at least 36 weeks, but can take up to 48 weeks of rotations in their fourth year. Only 24 weeks (credits) may be completed per semester.<\/li>\n<li>One 4-week block in the Fall semester must be dedicated toward Step study. This does not count toward the 24 credit maximum.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>4th Year Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sub-Internship (4 weeks)<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is a mandatory 4-week rotation that is assigned via the lottery optimization process. It must be completed at BMC as part of the core 36-week requirement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geriatrics Rotation (4 weeks)<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is a mandatory 4-week rotation that is also assigned via the lottery optimization process. It must be completed at BMC as part of the core 36-week requirement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Longitudinal Requirement<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents must complete 20 or more hours in approved longitudinal activities, such as teaching, quality improvement electives, research, or self-directed learning.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Additional Rotations<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents must complete additional elective rotations to fulfill the 36-week requirement. A minimum of 8 weeks must be from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/offices-services\/md-program-offices\/registrars-office\/current-medical-students\/fourth-year-student-information\/fourth-year-elective-catalog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CAMED Fourth Year Elective Catalog<\/a>, with no more than 20 weeks outside the BU system, no more than 12 weeks in non-clinical electives, and no more than 16 weeks within a given sub-specialty.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take Step 2 CK<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents are required to take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmle.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USMLE Step 2 CK<\/a> by <strong>November 1 <\/strong>of their fourth year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Building your Schedule<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Lottery<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Preferences Input (early December)<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents input their preferences for required courses, like the Geriatrics and Sub-Internship rotations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Results Released (by early February)<\/strong><br \/>\nLottery results for Sub-Internship and Geriatrics rotations will be available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Electives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early February<\/strong><br \/>\nThe add\/drop system opens for students to begin scheduling elective rotations.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/wwwapp.bumc.bu.edu\/busm\/eads\/students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Add\/Drop System<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nElective courses are assigned through an ongoing add\/drop process, allowing flexibility in building the schedule.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elective Lotteries<br \/>\n<\/strong>Certain departments use internal processes, such as elective lotteries or waitlists, to manage enrollment in early blocks. This ensures equal access to key rotations for students applying to those fields, particularly those seeking letters of recommendation.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medstudentresearch\/m4-research-elective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Research Elective<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nStudents may take up to 12 weeks of research for credit, either within BU or through outside electives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ongoing<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents can continue to make changes to their schedule through the add\/drop system after submission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Outside Electives \u2013 VSLO, Non-VSLO<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/visiting-student-learning-opportunities\/visiting-student-learning-opportunities-vslo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>VSLO (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities)<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nStudents can arrange electives at LCME-accredited U.S. medical schools through the VSLO program. Acceptance must be added to the student&#8217;s BU schedule through the add\/drop system.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/offices-services\/md-program-offices\/medical-education\/policies\/policy-on-eligibility-of-outside-electives-for-degree-credit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Non-VSLO Outside Electives<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nStudents can also arrange electives outside of the VSLO program. Approval from BU faculty is required before arranging these electives, and the approval form must be submitted prior to starting the elective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Additional Information<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Alternate Paths<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dual Degrees \u2013 MBA, MPH, MS, JD, PhD, OMFS<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents pursuing dual degrees can adjust their fourth-year schedule to accommodate coursework for degrees like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/camed\/programs\/combined-md-mba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MBA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/sph\/programs\/medicine-and-public-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MPH<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/camed\/programs\/md-mscr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MS<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/camed\/programs\/combined-mdjd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JD<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/camed\/programs\/md-phd-combined-degree\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PhD<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/dental\/academics\/departments\/omfs\/education\/residency-training\/6-year-md-integrated-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OMFS<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Research<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medstudentresearch\/m4-research-elective\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>At BU<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nStudents in good academic standing may take up to 12 weeks of research at BU for fourth-year credit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outside BU<\/strong><br \/>\nResearch done outside BU counts toward the 20-week limit on outside electives. Research approval is required before starting.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/medstudentresearch\/research-year-program-bumc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research Year<\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong>Medical students at BU Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine may choose to take an additional year (outside of the medical school curriculum) to undertake full-time research under the guidance of a mentor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Time Away<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Policy<br \/>\n<\/strong>Students should familiarize themselves with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/offices-services\/md-program-offices\/medical-education\/policies\/attendance-time-off-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Attendance, Time Off, and Personal Days Policy.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Excused Absence<br \/>\n<\/strong>Students may <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwapp.bumc.bu.edu\/MedPersonalDays\/Home\/Index0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">request an excused absence<\/a> for a variety of reasons, including illness, religious observances, residency interviews, or personal emergencies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leave of Absence (LOA)\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/offices-services\/md-program-offices\/studentaffairsoffice\/additional-student-resources\/policiesforms\/student-evaluation-promotions-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">apply for a leave of absence<\/a> for reasons including research, fellowships, outside degrees, or personal circumstances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Modified Curriculum<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>M4 Split Over 4 Part-Time Semesters<\/strong><br \/>\nSome students may choose to split the fourth year over four part-time semesters.
