{"id":124584,"date":"2024-10-03T14:16:36","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T18:16:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/?page_id=124584"},"modified":"2026-04-17T11:29:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T15:29:35","slug":"visiting-medical-students","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/camed\/offices-services\/md-program-offices\/registrars-office\/visiting-medical-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Visiting Student Elective Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Boston University Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine has an established program for medical students interested in applying for electives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>International Medical Students:<\/strong><br \/>\nBoston University Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine does not currently accept international medical students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Domestic Medical Students:<\/strong><br \/>\nAll domestic medical students must apply through the <a href=\"https:\/\/students-residents.aamc.org\/visiting-student-learning-opportunities\/visiting-student-learning-opportunities-vslo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO)<\/a> system. The first block available for visiting students in the current academic year begins on June 8, 2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eligibility:<\/strong><br \/>\nStudents must be in good academic standing and in their final year at a Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accredited medical school, or an osteopathic college of medicine accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). Applications are processed through the VSLO platform.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Application Fee:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe fee for accepted applicants is $150.00, non-refundable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Electives:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All electives are 4 weeks long and are subject to availability. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Rotation dates are firm and cannot be modified.<\/span>\u00a0 Boston University students have priority for elective placements. Visiting students are limited to one 4-week rotation. Once assigned to an elective, the placement is final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Insurance Requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Commercial General Public Liability Insurance:<\/strong> Minimum coverage of $1 million per occurrence \/ $3 million aggregate. If your school does not provide this insurance or has coverage below the required limits, please have your home school contact upload a letter from your registrar office stating this.\u00a0 The letter will be reviewed to determine whether the CGL requirement can be waived.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Professional Liability Insurance:<\/strong> Minimum coverage of $1 million per occurrence \/ $3 million aggregate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Immunization Requirements:<\/strong><br \/>\nVisiting students must meet the <a href=\"\/camed\/files\/2026\/04\/BMC-Immunization-form-for-VSLO-students.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMC Immunization Requirements<\/a> for VSLO students, including submitting COVID-19 vaccination documentation and a <a href=\"\/camed\/files\/2026\/04\/TB-Symptom-Screening-Form-11.01.24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TB Risk Assessment Form<\/a>\u00a0as part of the application process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Training Requirements:<br \/>\n<\/strong><span data-contrast=\"auto\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" lang=\"EN-US\" class=\"TextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\">OSHA<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\"> and<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\"> <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\">BLS (or ACLS) <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\"> need to be current for your <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\">desired <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\">rotation<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\">(s)<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW174180573 BCX0\">.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW174180573 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Background Check Requirement: <\/strong>Boston Medical Center reserves the right to conduct a CORI background check on all visiting students.\u00a0<u><\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>Housing &amp; Parking:<\/strong><br \/>\nThe School does not provide housing or parking privileges for visiting students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Policies &amp; Procedures:<\/strong><br \/>\nVisiting students are required to follow all policies and regulations of the Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine. Violation of any school policy will result in immediate withdrawal from the elective.
