This $9 million grant will support research on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationleducq.org\/network\/translational-framework-for-innovation-in-cerebral-amyloid-angiopathy-traffic-26cvd03\/\">&#8220;Translational Framework For Innovation in Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (TRAFFIC)<\/a>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fondationleducq.org\/network\/translational-framework-for-innovation-in-cerebral-amyloid-angiopathy-traffic-26cvd03\/\">&#8220;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>The goal of this research is to improve the detection and diagnosis process for cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), a condition that causes brain bleeds and cognitive decline, often contributing to dementia.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/camed\/files\/2026\/06\/Andreas-Charidimou-crop.jpg\" alt=\"man with dark hair and facial hair wearing glasses and blue suit\" class=\"wp-image-144881\" width=\"201\" height=\"215\"\/><figcaption>Andreas Charidimou, MD, PhD, MSc, FESO<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Charidimou is an assistant professor of neurology at Boston University Chobanian &amp; Avedisian School of Medicine and the assistant medical director for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cbr\/\">BU Center for Brain Recovery<\/a>.  He will co-lead the project with his international collaborator Marcel Verbeek, PhD, MSc, from Radboud University Medical Center (Netherlands). BU is the leading coordinating center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of this research is to improve the detection and diagnosis process for cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), a condition that causes brain bleeds and cognitive decline, often contributing to dementia. The researchers will combine advanced brain imaging and new molecular biomarkers to improve earlier detection, while also training the next generation of CAA scientists through mentorship and funding.
