Osamu Sakai, MD, PhD

Biography
Dr. Sakai was born and raised in Japan. He graduated from Yamagata University School of Medicine, Japan in 1988, and completed radiology residency at Jichi Medical School Hospital, Japan in 1993, and served as a faculty at Jichi Medical School in 1993-2001. He received his PhD from Jichi Medical School in 1998. Dr. Sakai first came to Boston as a research fellow at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School in 1998-1999. After the fellowship he went back home but two years later he joined Boston Medical Center as a neuroradiology fellow in 2001. After his completion of neuroradiology fellowship, he stayed at BU/BMC as a faculty in Radiology.
Dr. Sakai is a board-certified radiologist in both Japan and the U.S. with neuroradiology subspecialty board certification. He was trained and has been practicing, teaching and conducting research in different languages and cultures, which helps him understand students, residents/fellows, colleagues as well as patients from different backgrounds. Dr. Sakai’s academic interest is neuroradiology and head and neck radiology. He has published multiple books and chapters in the U.S. and Japan in both English and Japanese. His research interests are diverse and include head and neck cancer, sickle cell disease, amyloidosis, aging, and trauma.
