The Student Research Fellowship supports medical students conducting clinical or translational research in vascular disease. Several students are selected each year based on submitted research proposals for projects that are hypothesis-focused with thoughtful study design and strategic goals.

Zhu’s research is focused on social disparities in vascular surgery health outcomes, particularly in the area of hemodialysis access. His project uses the Area Deprivation Index (ADI), an aggregate score of various social disparities based on 9-digit zip code, to study the relationship between social disparities and effects on the presentation, management, and health outcomes for patients undergoing hemodialysis access for end-stage kidney disease. He conducted this research within the Department of Surgery at Boston Medical Center, Division of Vascular Surgery.

Zhu has additionally been funded by the National Institute of Health through a T35 training grant. His career interests lie in vascular surgery and he plans to apply for an integrated vascular surgery residency in the 2023-2024 cycle.

The Society for Vascular Surgery seeks to advance excellence and innovation in vascular health through education, advocacy, research and public awareness. The organization was founded in 1946 and currently has a membership of more than 6,000. SVS membership is recognized in the vascular community as a mark of professional achievement.
