Biography

Emily first became inspired to work in women’s health while serving as a volunteer at a family center in Mexico. Equally inspired by the culture there, she returned to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to complete her undergraduate degree in Latin American Social and Cultural Studies in 2005. After first working with a Migrant Education project, and later as a translator, Emily chose to pursue her initial dream. She enrolled in the Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner program at Boston College, and in 2012 earned her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN). She was then employed for five years in the busy OB/GYN outpatient department at East Boston Neighborhood Health Center. There, she cared for women from all over the world, primarily Latin America. She provided a full range of gynecological and obstetrical care, and was often the point person for lactation concerns, given her long-term interest and expertise in breastfeeding. From there she delved into work with New England Mothers First (NEMF) which is a nurse practitioner owned and run breastfeeding medicine practice. She created a bridge between NEMF and the Brockton Neighborhood Health Center, expanding language access to breastfeeding medicine services in both home and office settings. During this time Emily achieved a post master’s in midwifery and joined the Midwifery practice at BU Medical Group in July of 2020. Connecting breastfeeding medicine with midwifery in the setting of Boston Medical Center became a significant focus for Emily’s work. In August of 2021 she co-founded the Boston Medical Center Breastfeeding Equity Center together with Dr. Bobbi Philipp, Dr. Katherine Standish, and Wilberthe Pilate RN/IBCLC. This multi-disciplinary team representing true dyadic care: midwifery/obstetrics, family medicine, pediatrics, and nursing launched with the pursuit of both the formation of a clinic based Breastfeeding Medicine Clinic within the OB/Gyn department as well as a foundation upon which improved hospital systems, research projects, and advocacy can come together collaboratively, and with an evidenced based approach to improving breastfeeding outcomes for all people. Emily continues to provide prenatal care as well as breastfeeding medicine specialty care in the department of OB/Gyn in the Women’s Center at Boston Medical Center where she teaches residents both on the labor and postpartum floors, but also in the breastfeeding medicine clinic. She also co-directs the breastfeeding medicine elective for fourth year medical students. Emily is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese, has a loving husband from Brazil, four sons, three dogs, a handful of chickens, plays violin, and sings in a local choir.
