As a neonatologist, I am focused on understanding how maternal and/or environmental factors can affect placental function and development to cause fetal and neonatal diseases such as fetal growth restriction (FGR) and neonatal abstinence syndrome. My work to date has focused on understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms for fetal growth restriction (FGR), with an emphasis on smoking-related fetal growth restriction. I am studying the effects of altered placental Wnt signaling and carbon monoxide exposure in the pathogenesis of fetal growth restriction, using cell-based assays, mouse models of pregnancy and clinical studies. The major goals of my work are to discern how environmental exposures and maternal disease can alter fundamental signaling pathways such as Wnt signaling in the placenta, and to identify and validate novel placental biomarkers of fetal/neonatal diseases that may also drive disease process.
