AY20 Awards & Honors

Daniel P. Alford, MD, MPH, Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Continuing Medical Education, received the John P. McGovern Award for Excellence in Medical Education from the Association for Multidisciplinary Education and Research in Substance use and Addiction (AMERSA). The McGovern Award is AMERSA’s highest honor recognizing exemplary leadership in the fields of substance use education and research.

Rhoda Au, PhD, Professor of Anatomy & Neurobiology, received the InvestAcure Cure Coin Award for her work on the use of digital technology to diagnose and predict the development of Alzheimer’s Disease and other dementias.

Joshua Barocas, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, received the Herbert W. Nickens Faculty Fellowship, an annual award given by the Association of American Medical Colleges to a junior faculty member demonstrating leadership in addressing disparities in medical education and health care.

Emelia Benjamin, MD, ScM, FACC, FAHA, Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Diversity in the Department of Medicine and BUMC Assistant Provost for Faculty Development, received the 2019 Laennec Clinician/ Educator Lecturer, Council on Clinical Cardiology from the American Heart Association; the 2019 Distinguished Achievement Award, Council on Genomic and Precision Medicine; and the 2020 Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award.

Laurence H. Beck, Jr., MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine, was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Distinguished Researcher Award by the American Society of Nephrology. This new Midcareer Award recognizes nephrologists who have distinguished themselves in five key areas of accomplishment early in their careers

Chandramouli Chandrasekaran, PhD, Assistant Professor of Anatomy & Neurobiology, has received the BU Moorman-Simon Interdisciplinary Career Development Professorship.

David Coleman, MD, John Wade Professor and Chair of Medicine, received the Robert H. Williams, MD, Distinguished Chair of Medicine Award from the Association of Professors of Medicine. The award is presented to a physician who has demonstrated outstanding leadership as the chair of a department of internal medicine.

Shoumita Dasgupta, PhD, Professor of Medicine and Assistant Dean for Admissions, received a Fulbright Specialist Award to Egypt at Ains Shams University. Her project aims to exchange knowledge and establish partnerships benefiting participants, institutions and communities both in the U.S. and overseas through a variety of educational and training activities.

Florian Douam, PhD, Assistant Professor of Microbiology, received the BU Peter Paul Career Development Professorship.

Deborah Frank, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, received the Massachusetts Medical Society’s Award for Excellence. The award honors a physician who has made a distinguished demonstration of compassion and dedication to the medical needs of his or her patients and the general public.

Dennis Jones, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, has received the BU Ralph Edwards Career Development Professorship.

Nidhi Lal, MBBS, MPH, Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine, has received the Women’s Health Award from the Massachusetts Medical Society.

Weining Lu, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, was named BU’s Innovator of the Year.

Akira Murakami, MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology and Priscilla Slanetz, MD, Clinical Instructor of Radiology, have received the 2019 Editor’s Recognition Award for Special Distinction for outstanding contribution to the peer review of manuscripts by the journal Radiology.

Perla Macip-Rodriguez, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, was selected an Emerging Leader in Hospice and Palliative Medicine from the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.

Ann McKee, MD, William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor of Neurology and Pathology and Director of the CTE Center, was named a 2019 Service to America Medalist and received the Paul A. Volcker Career Achievement Medal from the Partnership for Public Service.

Vaishali Sanchorawala, MD, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Amyloidosis Center, was elected secretary of the International Society of Amyloidosis. She will serve in this role for a two years.

Carl G. Streed Jr., MD, MPH, FACP, Assistant Professor of Medicine, was among those named the 2019 Ten Outstanding Young Leaders (TOYL) honorees. The TOYL Awards are presented annually by City Awake, a program of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce aimed at connecting, engaging, and celebrating next-generation leaders. Dr. Streed is the recipient of the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Outstanding Recent Graduate Award in gratitude and appreciation of excellence through outstanding professional or volunteer achievements. Also, Dr. Streed was selected to serve as an expert consultant for the Eurasian Key Populations Health Network to address issues related to transgender health and HIV.

Andrew W. Taylor, PhD, Professor of Ophthalmology and Associate Dean for Research, has been named to the steering committee of the Association of American Medical College’s Group on Research Advancement and Development (GRAND).

Jennifer Tseng, MD, James Utley Professor and Chair of Surgery, has been named a Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce 2020 Pinnacle Awards honoree for outstanding achievement in the Professions category.

Megan Young, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, received the 2019 Women Physicians Section Inspiration Award from the American Medical Association.

BUMG

Seven members of the BUSM faculty have received Clinical Excellence Awards from the Boston University Medical Group. Recipients become members of the BUMG Clinical Excellence Society.

New Faculty Excellence Award – Kara C. (KC) LaMattina, MD, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, and Sabrina Sanchez, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery.

Excellence in Care Award – Soukaina Adolphe, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, and Manishi Desai, MD, Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology.

Excellence in Leadership Award – Eileen Costello, MD, Clinical Professor of Pediatrics.

Advanced Practice Provider Excellence Award – Lisa Mendelson, NP, Assistant Professor of Hematology & Oncology, and Cherisse Carlo, NP, Instructor of Medicine.
