The Faculty Affairs Office is pleased to announce that Abdul Saied Calvino, MD, is the Distinguished Faculty of the Month for May.

A member of the BUSM faculty since 2015, Dr. Calvino is an assistant professor of surgery at Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, RI. For the last 3.5 years, Dr. Calvino has served as an associate director for the surgery clerkship.

Dr. Calvino completed his undergraduate degree from La Salle School, Republic of Panama; his MD from the University of Panama School of Medicine and MPH from the University of Illinois-Chicago. He completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Illinois-Chicago and his Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Roger Williams Medical Center.

His nominators say, “Dr. Calvino immediately brought a huge amount of energy into this role and prioritized the teaching of BUSM students. Without ever being asked to do so, he routinely organized dedicated teaching sessions for our students including suturing workshops as well as extra practical didactic sessions.

“He travels from Rhode Island to BUSM sometimes several times a month for OSCE exams, giving didactic lectures, proctoring student presentations, attending meetings, and so many other commitments. He has likewise been the first person on call to help any struggling student. During the COVID pandemic, he immediately volunteered for the heavy lifting of completely restructuring the curriculum on extremely short notice.

“His level of commitment to the students and the clerkship is unparalleled, and he, along with Dr. Espat and his partners, have made Roger Williams a favorite site for the Surgery Clerkship.”

“Dr. Calvino is a true partner in the education of BUSM students.”

Congratulations!
