{"id":2311,"date":"2011-12-02T17:37:53","date_gmt":"2011-12-02T22:37:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm-pathology\/?p=2311"},"modified":"2011-12-02T17:38:21","modified_gmt":"2011-12-02T22:38:21","slug":"december-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm-pathology\/2011\/12\/02\/december-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"December 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Pathology &amp; Laboratory Medicine News Items<\/h2>\n<h3>Announcements:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Boston Magazine has released its annual Top Docs issue and our own<strong> Dr. Antonio de las Morenas<\/strong> was once again on the list of \u201cTop Docs\u201d Congratulations Dr. de las Morenas<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Michael Roehrl <\/strong>was an invited speaker on Ultra-Rapid Biobanking at the October 2011 Molecular Diagnostics for Personalized Medicine Conference in Hannover, Germany<\/li>\n<li>Also <strong>Dr. Roehrl<\/strong> taught a new postgraduate course for pathologists on &#8220;Systems Pathology: An Introduction to Omic Approaches in Modern Personalize Medicine&#8221; for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) at the Annual Meeting in Las Vegas in October 2011.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Roehrl<\/strong> will teach a related course at the next USCAP Meeting in Vancouver in March 2012<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Michael Roehrl <\/strong>has just been re-elected as the IMG Delegate to the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) House of Delegates<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Carl O\u2019Hara<\/strong> gave the annual Stanley L. Robbins lecture to the New England Society of Pathologists on November 15th. This lecture is named in honor of Dr. Robbins, former Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. O\u2019Hara lecture \u201cNew Proposal for the Classification of Lung Adenocarcinoma: What Happened to BAC\u201d was presented to a standing room only group of pathologists. After dinner Dr. O\u2019Hara presented two cases of lung cancer to further illustrate how the changes in classification impact clinical care of the patients. There is tremendous symmetry with Dr. O\u2019Hara giving the annual Robbins lecture, since he is also the recipient of the Stanley Robbins Teaching Award in 2011 from the Boston University School of Medicine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jacqueline Bouchard, PhD Candidate<\/strong> in the Remick Lab traveled to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois, for the Annual Alcohol and Immunology Research Interest Group (AIRIG) conference on November 18th, 2011.\u00a0 Jackie gave both a poster and oral presentation of her work entitled &#8220;Ethanol Intoxication as a New Trigger for Atopic Asthma.&#8221;\u00a0 Jackie also received a travel award funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) to cover the entire cost of attendance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dr. Kendra Iskander<\/strong>, a surgical resident conducting research in the Remick Lab on a T32 Fellowship, was awarded a resident scholarship to attend the Society of Thoracic Surgeons meeting in Ft. Lauderdale this January.\u00a0 It includes hotel, registration, and airfare.\u00a0 The meeting should be good for networking and professional development.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Welcome to NEW FACES!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nikolajczyk Lab: Dr. Jason DeFuria<\/strong> will be joining <strong>Barb Nikolajczyk\u2019s<\/strong> lab Dec. 1 as a post-doctoral fellow and as a trainee of the Hematology Training Grant.\u00a0 Jason got his PhD at Tufts and is an expert on obesity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Panchenko Lab: Dr. Maria Panchenko<\/strong> has two new research technicians in the lab:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Joseph Haegele<\/strong>, recent graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with degree in Chemistry<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sherry Blackmon<\/strong>, recent graduate of Bridgewater State University with degree in Molecular Biology<\/li>\n<li>Both will be engaged in experimental research activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Publications: PUBLISHED<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Toribio Y<\/strong>, <strong>Roehrl MHA<\/strong>.
