{"id":16781,"date":"2023-08-29T14:33:06","date_gmt":"2023-08-29T18:33:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm-pathology\/?page_id=16781"},"modified":"2023-10-03T15:39:08","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T19:39:08","slug":"curriculum-overview","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bumc.bu.edu\/busm-pathology\/ap-cp-residency-program\/curriculum-overview\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Curriculum Overview<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AP\/CP Residency Program at BMC adheres to the guidelines of the American Board of Pathology and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to ease the transition into residency, first year residents have one month of orientation which includes hands-on, one-on-one training at the surgical bench grossing with a certified PA, as well as training in autopsy dissection and frozen section techniques. In addition, a multitude of introductory pathology lectures are offered to ensure all residents are prepared for their first AP rotation. Upper level residents are also assigned supervisory roles during this period and throughout the year to ensure first year residents receive proper training and support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This program consists of 27 months of AP and 18 months of CP. The remaining 3 months may be spent completing either AP or CP, depending on the resident\u2019s particular interests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotations are divided into 4 or 5 week blocks;\u00a0 anatomic and clinical pathology rotations typically alternate and occur during all 4 years of training.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anatomic Pathology (27 blocks)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clinical Pathology (18 blocks)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elective time (3 blocks)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Anatomic Pathology Rotations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include at least the following:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orientation (1)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Resections\u00a0 &amp; Frozens (12)<\/li>\n<li>Gastrointestinal\/Liver Biopsies (4)<\/li>\n<li>Non-GI Biopsies (4)<\/li>\n<li>Autopsy*<\/li>\n<li>Cytopathology (3)<\/li>\n<li>Neuropathology*<\/li>\n<li>Dermatopathology (Department of Dermatopathology) <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Forensic Pathology (Office of the Chief Medical Examiner) <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2 weeks)<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Renal Pathology (2 weeks)<\/li>\n<li>Placenta Pathology (2 weeks)<\/li>\n<li>Molecular Pathology (2 weeks)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">** Autopsy, and neuropathology rotations are integrated into various AP rotations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Clinical Pathology<\/b> <b>Rotations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include at least the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood Bank\/Transfusion Medicine (4)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microbiology (4)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemistry (4)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hematology\/Hematopathology (4)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CP Selective\/Choice (2)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Electives<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Residents are allotted (3) months of electives; which can be used as AP or CP, in-house, or outside rotations.
