Initiatives in Uganda

Makerere-University

In parallel to the activities held in Boston, the BUSM-MUK Infectious Diseases Training Program also promotes short-term training in Uganda.

Through the program Tool-box for Basic Research and Human Experimentation, training is offered in core areas related to the conduct of basic and translational research:

  • Laboratory safety
  • Ethics
  • Compliance
  • Safety of human subjects
  • Good clinical practice
  • Development of grant
  • Proposals for funding
  • Scientific writing

Also available are periodic programs and updates on Current Issues in Emerging Infectious Diseases Research, tutorials and practicums on research methodology and presentation of scientific data.

.The  2015 Host-pathogen Interaction in TB and HIV  short course took place at Makerere University, from April 13th to 17th. It welcomed 70 participants and covered a wide range of topics relevant to the field, including but not limited to:

  • Epidemiology, clinical manifestation and pathology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection and disease
  • Basic and clinical microbiology of Mtb and other opportunistic mycobacteria
  • TB-HIV co-infection: host-pathogen interaction, clinical immunology, challenges in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment
  • Mechanisms and management of TB and immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome
  • Approaches to drug therapy and mechanisms of drug resistance in Mtb
  • Biomarkers of transmission and diagnosis
  • Vaccine development
  • TB bioinformatics

The guest speaker panel included highly specialized professionals with experience in TB and HIV as researchers, scientists, physicians, and faculty members:

The BUSM-MUK Collaboration is also committed to assist with resource and infrastructure development at Makerere University. Among other improvements and contributions, the program is providing computers and journal subscriptions to the MUK medical library.
