About the Institutions

Makerere University in Kampala (MUK), Uganda, has a long-standing relationship with the United States through collaborations in research. The international cooperation between institutions has proven beneficial to scientific advances in the past.

Boston Medical Center (BMC) and Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) are well-established centers of advanced research, with cutting-edge technology, varied resources and collaborations, and highly specialized professionals with a strong commitment to global health.

The BUSM-MUK Infectious Diseases Training Program aims to expand and potentiate the relations between these two institutions through scientific and academic exchange and training.

About the Program

The collaboration is an approved program of the Fogarty International Center (FIC), a division of the United States National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The mission of FIC is to facilitate and enhance international cooperation for the advance of global health. Through the Global Infectious Disease Research Training Program, it promotes collaborations between U.S. and low- and middle-income country (LMIC) institutions, with the goal of strengthening the capacity of an LMIC institution to conduct infectious disease research.

Through the Fogarty International Center, the BUSM-MUK Infectious Diseases Training Program aims to develop institutional and national capacity at MUK in Uganda to conduct basic science research on emerging infectious diseases and TB.
