Motor Scooters

In order to maximize capacity for all commuters, move forward with our sustainability commitment and encourage the health of all medical center personnel, the following regulations will be strictly enforced:

  • Scooters or motorcycles should NOT park at bicycle racks. These racks  are reserved for BIKES ONLY. Any scooters or motorcycles parked at bike racks will be ticketed by Public Safety.
  • All gas-powered scooters must park in the 610 Garage. Racks for gas-powered scooters are located on the right side of the entrance. All gas-powered scooters are required to have a BUMC sticker issued by TranSComm. The annual coast is $20. Stickers may be obtained at the Office of Parking and Transportation located at 710 Albany St.
  • Electric-powered scooters must park in the bike cages located at the Menino and East Newton Pavilions for a $20 annual fee. Permits for the bike cages may be obtained at TranSComm at 710 Albany St.
  • Electric-powered scooters must park along the sides of the bike cages so they do not take up additional bike parking spaces or obstruct movement of other bicycles/scooters.
  • Motorcycles may park in BUMC garages at regular parking fees.

City of Boston Scooter Parking Laws

Existing Boston parking laws (specifically M.G.L. c. 90 §1B-E), which regulate motorized bicycles mandate that the vehicle/its operator must:

  • Have a registration sticker affixed to it
  • Be registered with the Mass. RMV (motorized bicycles are classified as “motor vehicles”)
  • Carry a valid driver’s license / learner’s permit
  • Wear a safety helmet
  • Drive at speeds 25 mph or lower
  • Avoid driving on (a) roadways where bicycles are prohibited or (b) off-street recreational paths
