Center for Regenerative Medicine
The Center for Regenerative Medicine (CReM) at Boston University’s Medical Campus is dedicated to advancing stem cell research and regenerative medicine for the sake of patients — particularly those suffering from diseases seen at Boston Medical Center, the teaching hospital of Boston University School of Medicine. Inspired by the Boston Medical Center mission of providing ‘exceptional care without exception’ the CReM targets selected diseases by bringing together established teams of stem cell biologists, physician-researchers, and biomedical engineers at Boston University and Boston Medical Center. Research in developmental biology is a particular focus of CReM investigators, motivated by the philosophy that understanding how tissues form during embryonic development is the key to understanding stem cell biology.
Founded in 2009, the CRM was launched by productive investigators who had already established world class disease-focused research programs in lung stem cell and developmental biology, bone injury and repair, sickle cell disease, and amyloidosis. A renowned research program in Biomedical Engineering at Boston University joined stem cell biologists on campus to focus on key issues limiting the delivery of therapeutic stem cells into the body. These events coincided with completion of the only BL4 (biosafety level 4) research facility in New England- the National Emerging Infectious Disease Laboratory (NEIDL) at Boston University – providing unprecedented disease platforms and model systems to expand the study of lung stem cell and developmental biology to include the study of pulmonary infections, defense, and repair. Thus, the CReM was born encompassing six research programs with shared core facilities, including the CReM’s vector core, iPS cell bank, and superb young stem cell scientists newly recruited to our campus.

CReM investigators collaborate extensively to advance our research mission, sharing research cores, interacting in a monthly stem cell seminar series, and serving on state, national, and international research panels and advisory boards. Novel research tools developed in our program are routinely shared without charge with investigators across the world. Many of our investigators also care for patients at Boston Medical Center, providing ‘exceptional care without exception.’ Please enjoy your visit to our website by clicking on one of our research programs or core facilities. Those who wish to learn more are invited to contact our CReM administrator (aomari@bu.edu) who can facilitate interactions with any of our friendly and accomplished researchers.
