The Quantitative Imaging Center (QIC) at Boston University is a research group within the Department of Radiology focusing on Musculoskeletal Radiology and especially magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In addition, QIC provides radiological analysis services for Industry, Foundation or NIH-sponsored trials. At present the main analyses QIC is involved in focus on semiquantitative assessment of MRI in osteoarthritis (OA) applying published MRI scoring systems, i.e. Whole Organ MRI Score (WORMS1), Boston Leeds Osteoarthritis Knee Score (BLOKS2) and MRI Osteoarthritis Knee Score (MOAKS3). The MRI scoring methods provide a quantitative measure for cross-sectional disease assessment and longitudinal evaluation of progression in OA patients. WORMS and BLOKS are both semi-quantitative scoring methods that permit a “whole-organ” evaluation of the knee in OA patients. Both scoring methods have been adopted and utilized in large epidemiological studies and clinical trials of OA. QIC members have scored several thousand MRIs using these scoring systems over the last 11 years. All team members are trained and validated on these three systems.
The team members also have long standing experience in semiquantitative assessment of fracture healing as well as scoring of osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis applying radiography and MRI.
