Beginning in 2009, the Public Safety Department has honored officers and members of the community for their exemplary service at the Public Safety Awards Banquet.  The recognition of excellence enhances morale, reinforces a culture of commitment to a consistently high standard of performance, and motivates personnel to perform their individual duties at the highest possible level.

Individuals have been nominated for many meritorious acts that are consistent with the awards listed below.  Award nominations may be submitted in writing by any officer, employee or student to a Public Safety Supervisor, Manager or through the form at the bottom of this page.

Award categories include:


An award to any member of the Boston University Public Safety Department or law enforcement officer who has performed a specific act of bravery that demonstrated great characteristics of selflessness, outstanding courage and devotion to duty in the protection and defense of life and public safety. This award will be presented in the form of a medal, a ribbon bar and a certificate.


An award to any member of the Public Safety Department for an outstanding accomplishment with has resulted in improved administration, improved operations, or substantial savings in manpower or operational costs, where the recipient has gone above and beyond the requirements of his/her normal assignment to contribute to a more effective and efficient public safety service. This award will be presented in the form of a ribbon bar and a certificate.


An award to any member of the Public Safety Department for outstanding performance that has brought great credit to the Department. This includes exemplary conduct during field incidents or operations; exceptional administrative work, the effective handing of criminal investigations, the organization of new and beneficial departmental programs; designing and conducting course of training and commendable participation in any other activity that improves the department’s function. It may also be presented to any employee who has demonstrated long-term excellence in service to the Public Safety Department. This award will be presented in the form of a ribbon bar and a certificate.


This award may be presented to any person who is not a member of the Department of Public Safety who has materially aided the Department or its officers in some way. This includes assistance in solving crime or apprehension of criminals, aiding an officer in the field during a critical incident, and cooperating with or assisting the Department as a whole in any aspect of administration or operations. This award will be presented in the form of a certificate.


An award to any unit of the Public Safety Department whose function as a unit has exhibited exceptional professional skill and conduct during a coordinated action or has displayed consistent excellence in carrying out the unit’s mission. This award will be presented in the form of a ribbon bar and a certificate.
