In this “Research Blitz” short presentations describing research being conducted by faculty within the Department of Psychiatry will be presented. Dr. Amy Yule will present findings from a NIDA-funded pilot randomized controlled trial of quetiapine for youth with co-occurring substance use disorder and bipolar disorder. Drs. Sarah Valentine and Cara Fuchs will describe the methods used in an NIMH-funded study that aimed to develop a stepped care approach to PTSD treatment, starting with the implementation of low intensity treatments in integrated primary care. They will focus on describing their use of participatory methods and joint efforts to align the system prior to roll-out of a Brief Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) in BMC primary care. Dr. Lawrence Were will describe and apply ‘Health Systems Principles and Frameworks’ in analyzing access and utilization of psychiatric emergency services in the Boston Emergency Services Team (BEST) program.

Learning Objectives:
    1. Describe the impact of quetiapine on mood and substance use for youth with co-occurring bipolar disorder and substance use.
    2. Describe various strategies for engaging patient and provider stakeholders in intervention adaptation, system alignment, and implementation of evidence-based treatments for PTSD.
    3. Define healthcare systems, identify health systems building blocks and apply these to mental health services.
