Registration and Deadlines

OFFICIAL REGISTRATION You may be “officially registered” as a student at Boston University only after you provide proof of being able to pay your Boston University bill. Proof of payment may be payment in full by check. It may also include documentation of school-certified loans, grants, and outside funding such as military or National Health Service Corps scholarships. Loans and scholarships that are already being recognized as a means of paying will show as a “pending credit” on your invoice. Return your invoice, documentation of any unmentioned loans or scholarships, and payment of any remaining balance to Boston University, Student Accounting Services, 881 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA 02215-9163. You can find more information about the settlement of your student account in the brochure “The Guide” provided by Student Accounting Services with your invoice.

Dates by which official registration must be completed are published well ahead of time. You may call Student Accounting Services, your school’s registrar, or SFS if you are not sure by which date you must be officially registered. Dates vary depending upon the school you attend and the date your academic program starts for the year. Approximate registration/settlement dates are:

For Fall Semester

  • July 1 – First-year SDM students, third- and fourth-year MED students
  • Mid-August – All other students who previously attended BUMC
  • Mid-September – Other new students

For Spring Semester

  • Mid-December – All continuing students
  • Late January – New SPH students

Students who are not officially registered by the required dates should expect to pay a late charge which could be as much as $500. Appeals to waive the late charge must be made in writing directly to Student Accounting Services and waivers are seldom approved. SFS cannot make any adjustments to late charges assessed to a student.

LOAN APPLICATION DEADLINES Most lenders are now pre-approving loans when a student applies via the web or telephone. The lender then sends SFS a certification form for the pre-approved loan. Depending upon the time of year, it may take as long as six weeks for SFS to certify your loan. We will notify you if there are problems with your application.

Deadlines - The most important deadlines for applying to a lender for a loan are:

  • May 15 – fall semester for new SDM and third- and fourth-year MED students
  • June 1 – fall semester for all other students
  • October 1 – for spring semester for all students
  • February 15 – graduating students for the current year
  • March 1 – all other MED students for current year
  • April 15 – all other SDM students for current year
