Need-Based Aid
NEED-BASED GRANTS Donor Scholarships – These scholarships come from various funds established by donors to the specific schools. No repayment is required. A recipient is advised to learn the background of the scholarships and get advice on whatever communication with the donor might be appropriate. Such a scholarship will usually be credited to your University account for one semester only.
Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (SDS) [MED/SDM] – The institution is allowed some flexibility in determining disadvantaged status for purposes of awarding these federal funds. BUMC has determined that student applicants with a family income of less than $40,000 and an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of less than $10,000 meet the minimal qualifications. Information you provide on the BUMC application and PROFILE will help determine eligibility for consideration.
Federal Work-Study [SPH] – These funds come from a grant made to Boston University by the federal government and are available only to SPH students. You usually earn your Federal Work Study grant by working at an agency, which is non-profit, non-sectarian, and apolitical. There are some jobs available at BUMC for Work-Study students. You must complete paperwork with both the Work-Study Office at 881 Commonwealth Avenue and your employer in order to activate the payroll. You cannot deduct this award from your University bill but are instead paid as you earn the funds. Representatives in the Work-Study Office can be reached aat (617) 353-3596.
Summer Work-Study [SPH] – There are separate applications for these funds. They are usually available in mid-April and the awards cover the months of June, July and August.
