LEAVING SCHOOL
EXIT COUNSELING: Students with debt obligations of any kind must schedule an Exit Counseling Session prior to leaving Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM). The Exit Counseling Session is designed to help students understand their debt packages, deferment options, other repayment rights and responsibilities, and to establish manageable repayment schedules and review programs which may require a service obligation. Students should schedule appointments in person at The Office of Student Financial Services (OSFS) at least a week in advance. Primary Care recipients should schedule appointments with Joseph Corbett.
Each recipient of institutional or federal loans is required to attend an Exit Counseling Session before graduation, taking a leave of absence, or withdrawing from school, officially or unofficially.
REFUND AND REPAYMENT POLICY: At the time a student withdraws, takes a leave of absence, or separates from BUSM for any other reason, the student’s account will be reviewed and adjusted according to the University’s refund policy. By Department of Education regulation, refunds must be made within thirty days and returned in this order: unsubsidized Direct Loan, subsidized Direct Loan, Perkins, HPSL, SDS, LDS, state, institutional, private, and last to the student. If financial aid money has been released to the student for living expenses and the credit disbursed was greater than the budgeted living expenses for the period the student was enrolled, then repayment must be made of that portion of the financial aid received which exceeds the incurred living expenses. Repayment will be made in the same order as refunds. The repayment calculation is done after the refund calculation.
